MANILA, Philippines – Senator-judge Lito Lapid was welcomed by applause and smiles when he stood up to speak at the Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, during the 10th day of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Lapid, who spoke in Filipino, asked the prosecution questions on what is the difference between a cash advance and a loan.

“Nakalagay po sa SALN ni Justice Corona na nag-cash advance siya ng P11 million. Ano po ang difference ng cash advance sa loan o utang?” he asked.

Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali of the prosecution answered: “Iyon po ang inaalam natin dahil hindi naman share holder si Corona at Cristina pero nagca-cash advance sila kaya po nagpipresinta kami at nililinaw namin ngayon.”

Lapid said he just wanted to be clarified on whether their discussion was only meant to prove if the P11 million was a cash advance or a loan.

Lapid does not usually join the Senate debates. In a previous interview, he said he prefers to use the national language, but the Senate discussions are mostly in English.

During the debates on the RH bill, Lapid was quoted as saying it would take a lot of effort for him catch up with his reading to be at par with other senators especially since they spent 10 years or more in school.

Lapid takes Twitter by storm

Many were shocked when Senate President and Presiding Judge Juan Ponce Enrile called the gentleman from Pampanga. Usually the term refers to Senator-judge Francis Pangilinan.

Lapid, however, stood up, took the rostrum and said, "O, bakit kayo tumatawa diyan?"

After Lapid's surprise move, the incident took Twitter world by storm since it was his first question since the trial began.

“Tumigil ang mundo ng tumayo at nagtanong si Lito Lapid. *slow clap* #CJontrial,” said Twitter user @Leandrizzle.

As for @#tedfrancisco, he said: #Sen. Lito Lapid nakaka pressure maging senator-judge, kailangan magtanong ng may sense. Pero pasok ka! #CJonTrial”

Even ABS-CBN reporter Niña Corpuz was surprised to see Lapid making a query. “Wow, Sen. Lito Lapid is asking a question,” she said.

“I almost fainted when lito lapid stood up and took the podium,” said Twitter user @dacaballes.

Senator Lapid made it to the top local trending topics on Twitter for a few minutes.

learn

lito lapid must have realized by now that it's better to be literate and top of his world. he's already smart, so learning how to speak english should be easy for him. he can't stay as he is, he has so much to contribute but had not the right skills to do it. he can learn, he can be educated. so many older people are now learning new skills, lito lapid can too. he can learn english. he need not isolate himself and remained quiet. it's not good for his self esteem, not good for him to deprive people of his contribution.

I agree, lito can hire english tutor to teach him.

@mayhem

I read your comment. please know that english has been made our official language and medium of instruction in all schools, colleges and universities. english is also the universal language at the moment, it used to be greek, hebrew and latin long, long ago. if you speak english you're likely to hit a wider audience, heard by more people and understood by most. that's why, maybe, we have many dayuhan coming here in our country to learn how to speak correct english as many filipinos are now teaching english.

had lapid gone to college or taught by an english tutor, he might have been proficient in english grammar and usage. still, it's not too late for him. it would be to his advantage to learn english. one day, he might just be called to reprent our country to the world. and using interpreter might not be that great.

to mayhem27 . . .

What national dialects are you talking about. Tagalog as a national dialect has been slipping away for years. Where were all these years, the unofficial national dialects now in the Philippines is Tag-Lish, which is a commonly use dialects in PI. Don't tell me you don't use it in your conversation as well as in your text. Hipocrite.

Sasabihin ko ulit, ang South Korea, China, Japan etc at ang ibang Asian nations ay naging malakas ang ekonomiya kahit limitado ang English proficiency nila pero tayong Pinoy na tinaguriang "most proficient in English in Asia" is also considered as a "SICK MAN OF ASIA" and one of the poorest country in the World. Which one do you think could make you proud?

little entertainment:he needs to divert the issue about his wife

The question should be raised to this corrupt incompetent senator lapid. How did he accumulate such wealth from being a politican?.his mansion?what happened from the 500 million peso calamity fund when he was governor?the maliscious 40,000 dollar hidden pocket money of his wife in two socks? He is just driving away the issue ..Thats why i hate voting my fellow kababayans will just vote the celebrities without thinking if the person is qualified for the position.
