Noynoy unfazed by drop in survey ratings
MANILA, Philippines - Liberal Party standard-bearer Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III downplayed Wednesday the results of the latest Pulse Asia survey, showing that he and Nacionalista Party bet Sen. Manny Villar are now deadlocked in the presidential race.
In a statement, Aquino said he was not surprised by the survey results since his rivals in the presidential race had a long headstart in the campaign.
"While I diligently perform my functions as a legislator, the others are practically campaigning full-time, neglecting their mandate with those who entrusted them with their votes," he said.
The oppositon senator also noted that Villar seemed to have forged an alliance with President Arroyo. He said even the President's own deputy spokesman, Gary Olivar, praised Villar for shunning a "negative campaigning style.”
"By the day, it is becoming clear that an unholy alliance is developing between this administration and my opponent. No wonder the Palace spokesman couldn’t restrain himself in expressing his gratitude to one of my opponents for keeping quiet on the many issues confronting this administration," Aquino said.
Olivar earlier denied rumors that Malacañang was secretly backing Villar despite fielding its own candidate, Lakas-Kampi standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro, in the presidential election.
“I think the reason some people say that is because he (Villar) has not been running his campaign purely on the basis of attacking the President—which I can’t say, unfortunately, of the other opposition candidates,” he said.
He added, however, that Villar's increase in ratings in the presidential surveys could be the people's own reaction to candidates who continue to criticize the President.
In an ANC presidential forum last Friday, Aquino stressed the need for “closure” of the various scandals that affected the Arroyo government. He added that there is a need to restore confidence in the institutions that Arroyo has supposedly “destroyed.”
For his part, Villar said Nacionalista stalwarts had led congressional probes on various scandals linked to the Arroyos, including the "Hello, Garci" election scandal, the botched $329 million NBN-ZTE telecommunications deal and the jueteng payola controversy.
He added, however, that there is separation of powers between the executive and the judiciary, adding that he “will not lift a finger to defend President Arroyo against any charges on her.”
Villar ads cost P543-M in 3 months
Aquino and Villar are statistically tied in the latest presidential survey by pollster Pulse Asia. The survey, conducted last January 22-26, showed Aquino registering 37% of voter preferences and Villar getting 35%.
Aquino's rating dropped 8 percentage points since the last Pulse Asia survey while Villar's rating improved by 12 percentage points.
Across socio-demographic groups, Aquino led among Class D voters (40%) and voters aged 55-64 (38%) and 65 and up (42%). On the other hand, Villar is leading voter preferences among Class E voters (39%) and those aged 25-34 (42%).
Liberal Party director-general Chito Gascon, meanwhile, attributed Villar's increase in ratings to his massive campaign spending. He said data from AC Nielsen showed that Villar's camp spent as much as P70.43 million on ads in January, compared to P29.53 million for Gilbert Teodoro and P7.82 million for Aquino.
AC Nielsen also noted that Villar spent as much as P543 million on ads from October to December 2009, which put him as the only individual in the country's top 20 advertisers for the last quarter.
"It is clear that all-out TV advertising as a marketing gimmick has had an effect. We can also say that the latest survey is not yet reflective of how people will vote in the May 10 elections," he said.
In an interview on ANC's Dateline Philippines on Wednesday, Prof. Ronald Holmes, president of Pulse Asia, attributed Villar's gain of 12 percentage points to his "more sustained" marketing campaign.
He said this fact has been recognized by other presidential candidates. Holmes said some camps have complained about the 6 to 1 ratio of political ads in favor of Villar.
Holmes said this sustained campaign to get himself known has had a big impact on the public's perception of Villar.
'Sending the message is biggest challenge'
Aquino said the biggest challenge of his presidential campaign is how to send his message out of a clean, decent, transparent and accountable government to the voting public. He said his party will be putting out more ads in the coming days to address the concern.
The LP bet also said he expects the organizational strength of the party to be felt once the official campaign period starts this February.
Aquino said he was also on the receiving end of criticism when he first ran for congressman in 1998. He said that despite efforts to derail his candidacy, he was still able to muster enough votes to win the congressional race.
Finally, he reminded his supporters that he is still leading in the presidential surveys ever since he first declared his intention to run for president last year.
"I would like to assure everyone, especially our supporters, that as the formal campaign period starts, we will work harder to make sure that we remain on top of the fight and the hope of our people for a clean, competent and compassionate government through my tandem with Senator Mar Roxas will be fulfilled," he said.
Cool ka lang...
@ Rio
hahahhaha
katulad ka nga ni villar, ayaw sumagot sa mga scandals.
I think because you posted your comment, you want others to see it,
nagpresent ka pa nga ng corrections "UMANO" sa "FAULTY" na presentation ni monsod. Akala ko mas mapapaniwalaan ka kaysa kay monsod. Tahasan mo pang sinabi na faulty at dubious, egeggee
Now anong pakay nang pag Post mo?
keep it to yourself na lang eh ayaw mo naman palang paniwalaan ka eh,
o kayay tanungin. ehehhe
Comment ka nang comment, eh pag may nagComment sayu.
magagalit ka. ahahaha
Hey Yogi
I did not ask anyone to believe me better than Monsod, the backbiter. Dont accost me for something that I never asked for. Simple and straight, I believe Monsod is grandstanding for her presidential pick, that's all. I wasn't even talking to you but "patayin. . ." how come now you are saying things wholesale.
If you have brains yourself, you will not elect a candidate who has no qualifications and really riding on his parents achievements. What will he do in the next 6 years in case he wins? NOTHING, yes, no corruptions but no accomplishments as well just like his mother sitting for 6 years accomplishing nothing but tainting her presidency with scandals - Hacienda Luisita and Mendiola massacres.
I don't care who you are rooting for but please mind your own business, you stink!
Incorrect
@ RioAlma
I cannot believe you saying that Monsods, presentation is dubious.
Can we know why we should believe you instead of Monsod?
My god, if you have some brains, do not hit on solid walls head-on.
@ Counterforce
I think you should say that to Villar.
Power-salivating you said, but you see how Villar spent millions for adds compared to other candiates, how villar started his campaign 2 years earlier. now who's salivating?
About people arround NoyNoy, i can see they are way better than in Villars circle, not to mention Marcos, Satur Ocampo and others.
Just to get votes of diffrent sectors, Villar loaded his caravan with
rotten people.
About Kris Aquino, please give some respect to yourself,
Even kris aquino's yaya is more credible than you.
LaughingStock you said, yet Kris enjoys several adds that banks on her
image.
Lastly, Take some time thinking
before posting. OK
Rags to Riches?????
Lets get a more details from Villar.........
Mr. Villar claimed that he came from a poor family from Tondo. His father was a government employee and his mother was selling fish at the public market in Divisoria.
When he was a boy, Villar said that he helped his mother sell fish. This is True and fair play to him...
However, there were reports that Villar was adopted by the wealthy
Jalandoni family of Nueva Ecija. When he reached legal age, the Jalandoni patriarch deeded 400 hectares in Licab, Nueva Ecija under his name. Interesting isn't it??? so sa madaling salita..... instant milyonaryo sya... w/o lifting any finger....
In 1975, Villar married the former Cynthia Aguilar, daughter of a
politically powerful and wealthy family from Las Pinas City. With his
wife's wealth, Villar started building and selling homes. He became a
millionaire and a leader in the housing industry. Another twist in the story,
her wife has the financial capability to launch a good business.... sa akin kahit ako pagmay ganyang oportunidad ay kaya ko rin palakihin.... biruiin mo 400 hectares plus mayamang na misis equals opportunity and advantages in business.... kala ko yumaman dahil sa pagtitinda ng isda sa palengke....
Rags to riches???? not that i thinks of it......
Dazed, Not Unfazed
When you have nothing to offer but a famous surname, an infamous sister who is the laughingstock of polite society, and a spotlessly unaccomplished record in government service, you have no business running for President. You don't even have a cohesive message to deliver and you merely mouth words conjured by scheming and salivating-for-power factions running your campaign. You try to take the moral high ground but many of the people around you are no better and no less hypocritical than those you seek to demonize just to win sympathy votes as the so-called clean alternative. This country cannot afford another Aquino presidency and the return of the post-EDSA I elite that wholly failed to deliver on the promises of the anti-dictatorship struggle.
Give it a thought and spare this country.

I do respect your opinion on Winnie Monsod's faulty presentation of the facts regarding the C5 issue. However, I just want to mention a few facts to correct her presentation regarding the lot's pricing and this is regardless who owns the lot. In other words, the P30,000.00 per square meter valuation for the Masaito lots which are commercial lots was based from page 9 of the Revised Zonal Valuation of 1998 of the Department of Finance. The zonal value of Don Antonio Avenue – which are residential lots is 4,500, also based from page 9 of the Revised Zonal Valuation of 1998 of the Department of Finance.
I don't know where Winnie obtained the figures as stated on her presentation. The rest of her presentation are dubious.
Winnie Monsod presentation on C-5 caused damaged to Villar'
Before Prof Winnie Monsod presentation on C-5 I thought Manny Villar was a victim of dirty politics to destroy his candidacy to presidency. However, after listening and reading what Prof. Winnie Monsod had presented in her Blog or in Media, I had no doubt Manny Villar has ended enriched his family corporation. A simple consideration even on the lot prices per sq meter when you compare the prices at P11,500 plus on his real properties used in C-5 with that real properties not his own at P2,500.00. A big differences? Because of this I believe Prof Winnie Monsod had clearly present clear and brief presentation made fully believed that Manny Villar doesn’t deserve any position to take abuse making him profit. Sne. Manny Villar is the most dangerous and will be the real threat to replace corrupt GMA. If elected, it will be biggest disaster to come to Philippine nation, a possible of another EDSA history to come.
The Pulse Asia's polls surveys on how presidential candidate Manny like gaining points despite of UP Prof. Winnie Monsod true and very clear analysis has caused an irreparable damages to his candidacy. The Pulse Asia experts has lot to explain to the people how UP Prof Winnie Monsod presentation not creating damages? Who are the respondents of Pulse Asia? The electorates impaired to the Winnie Monsod clear presentation? Bulahin ninyo Lelong ninyo...
UNHOLY ALLIANCE MY A$S!
Noy when will you grow up and admit that you don't have what it takes to be the next President of the Republic? Now you are accusing Villar to be in connivance with GMA just because Villar caught up with you in the survey. You don't even realize that the more you attack GMA, the more you are losing the voters' confidence.
You're simply riding on your mother's popularity but this is not a popularity contest, the country's future is at stake. In case you are elected you'll be ending up like your mother (6 years at the helm without any noteworthy accomplishment except the unresolved Hacienda Luisita and the Mendiola massacre) in short - no curruption, no accomplishment either period.
Your Liberal Party surely screwed up when they chose you instead of Mar Roxas to run for the Presidency, This is LP's biggest blunder. Roxas himself is doubtful as VP he will sell the country to the next highest bidder like when he decided to backout and let you run
