MANILA - The Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food filed on Friday perjury charges against businessman Davidson Bangayan for allegedly lying under oath before the committee.

Horace Cruda, the legislative committee secretary, and Senate legal counsel Maria Valentina Cruz filed the 11-page perjury complaint against Bangayan. The complaint was signed by eleven senators led by Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food chairperson Senator Cynthia Villar and endorsed by Senate President Franklin Drilon

Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile earlier said Bangayan lied under oath when he told the committee that he is not alleged smuggling lord David Tan.

The Senate committee cited Bangayan for contempt but did not detain him, saying that perjury charges will be filed against the businessman.

Bangayan earlier confirmed that he is in the rice importation business even though he is not a licensed importer. He also said his lawyer made a mistake when he wrote in a complaint that he was Davidson Bangayan "a.k.a. David Tan."
