Most Filipinos don't trust China, survey says

MANILA - Majority of Filipinos are aware of the dispute between the Philippines and China about the West Philippine Sea.

In a survey commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Social Weather Stations results show: 73% awareness on the dispute between the Philippines and China among Filipinos, and 61% awareness on the case filed by the Philippines in the United Nations arbitration tribunal against China regarding the West Philippine Sea.

Fifty-six percent of Filipinos are also aware that China is strengthening its force in the West Philippine Sea and a net figure of +70 agree that the Philippines should ask help from other countries regarding China's continuous strengthening of military forces in the West Philippine Sea.

Around 73% of respondents in nationwide said they have long been aware of the dispute between Manila and Beijing. Meanwhile, 68% said they are aware that the West Philippine Sea might hold energy resources under its seabed.

Around 93% answered "yes" on the question whether the Philippines should defend its territory and natural resources in the West Philippine Sea through legal means.

The survey also revealed that Filipinos' trust in China has been in the negative since 2012 and stood at negative 17 in the survey held from December 11 to 16, 2013.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is satisfied with the results of the survey, adding that this only shows that their polices and decisions regarding the West Philippine Sea are well supported by the people.
