'Reyes' death should not stop search for truth, justice'
MANILA, Philippines - A former rebel soldier said on Saturday that the death of former Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes should not stop the investigations on corruption in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
“Dapat ituloy ang mga investigation dahil may mga statements na puwede sigurong gamitin para mag-file ng kaso. Dapat mabilis na mag-file ng kaso para makita na may aksyon ang gobyerno (The investigations should continue because there are already statements that can be used as basis to file case. Cases should be filed as soon as possible for the government to prove that is doing something),” retired Marine Col. Ariel Querubin told radio dzMM.
Querubin said he is saddened by the death of Reyes, which, he said, was untimely because the people, especially the soldiers, have yet to find out the whole truth about corruption in the military.
He said several soldiers have been sending him text messages and calls, calling for the investigations to push through.
Aside from the probes being conducted by both houses of Congress, the AFP leadership has also started its own investigation.
The Department of Justice is also poised to conduct its own probe to determine the liability of military and government officials involved.
“Talagang iyan ang gusto ng mga sundalo ngayon, na malaman kung sino ba dapat ang managot (That is what the soldiers want, to know who are liable),” he added.
'Don't hide the truth'
The group Pagbabago! People’s Movement for Change is also urging the Senate to continue its inquiry into the revelations of former military budget officer George Rabusa, who implicated Reyes and 2 other former military chiefs in various anomalies.
“Huwag sanang matakpan ng pagkamatay ni General Reyes ang katotohanan. That should not be the reason for stopping the Senate inquiry about military corruption and eventually prosecuting those who are ultimately responsible,” Dizon said at a forum about military corruption at De La Salle University-College of St. Benilde, where Rabusa was the main speaker.
Dizon said he believes that Rabusa is a “credible witness,” and people should help him prove his allegations.
The Former Senior Government Officials (FSGO) also issued a statement on Friday urging the government to continue the investigations.
The FSGO said Reyes' suicide after he was implicated in military corruption will be without honor if it has no impact on the welfare of the nation, the AFP and the government.
It added that: "If, on the other hand, his death inspires our leaders to finally clean up the corrupt system in the military that ensnared him, he might yet be the last soldier to die in our people’s war against corruption."
Soldiers in the field
Querubin said that there seems to be a “deliberate effort” to divert the real issue of military corruption following Reyes’s death.
He said that the unexpected suicide has overshadowed the deaths of soldiers in the field.
Querubin clarified that there is a growing sentiment among soldiers in the field that their fallen comrades should be the ones honored.
He said some of his men fought with him side-by-side in Mindanao during the all-out war against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the hunt for slain Abu Sayyaf leader Abu Sabaya in Basilan.
“Sentiments ng mga nasa field iyan, ng mga taong naapektuhan ng corruption,” he said.
Querubin said that when Rabusa came out, their suspicions that they were issued sub-standard equipage because of the corruption at the AFP’s general headquarters were proven.
“Parang pinapaano nila ang simpatya sa pagkamatay ni Secretary Reyes, eh na-o-overshadow ang mga ginawa ng mga sundalo (They are courting sympathy for Reyes, which is overshadowing the achievements of our soldiers on the field). They're not given the same honors,” he said. – with a report from Niña Corpuz, ABS-CBN News; dzMM
Can the CORRUPTION in the Philippines FREE itself?
If we STOP the investigations now on corruption and let those government officials go FREE and condone them to continue to do so, I therefore say, that the Filipino people are as guilty as they are. CORRUPTION KILLS! It kills the poor Filipinos with hunger, disease, disaster or crime because the money meant to help or protect them was stolen. It kills soldiers whose bullets ran out, whose guns fail, whose trucks ran out of gasoline, whose aircraft crashed due to poor maintenance, all because someone stole the money for their needs.
The CORRUPTION will NEVER end if GREED and abuse of POWER will continue to prevail. If we want "change" we have to persistently "FIGHT" for it...the fight against corruption should go DEEPER and continue to be "publicly" known as the Government owes it to the Filipino people. After all, the government is for the people, by the people and of the people. The Country will continue to live in poverty if our own people (the rich) are stealing from the poor. How can anyone live in luxury on someone else's misery and lost of lives?
If the investigations goes deeper, I’m certain that there's more HIGHER ranking gov't. officials such as former Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her entourage are involved NOT only in corruption but in the dead of Def. Sec. Angelo Reyes and those of others, and there will be more dead people if we don't put a STOP to it and put these heartless people behind bars. "No weapon or body, no crime..." In my opinion, the dead of Defense Sec, Angelo Reyes wasn't really a suicide it could have been that someone higher than him "MADE" him kill himself to prevent it from leading the investigations to them. I seriously believe that it was "homicide." He either took his life due to shame and/or afraid to have his family involved and get hurt OR they blackmailed him to kill himself and if he doesn't comply they will kill his family. If this is the case, if he sacrificed his life for his Superiors and peers, and his family, then I consider him a hero to them, and a COWARD/TRAITOR to his Country, he stole from the POOR kababayans and soldiers and BETRAYED them, he betrayed us!
It's an INSULT to our intelligence to what these heartless, murderous, evil people are doing to our Country especially to the POOR or the LESS fortunate people.
Justice should always prevail and we should never STOP fighting for a good cause. We should NEVER let our "heroes" die in vain ....their beliefs and their fought for justice/freedom should never STOP here, we should continue to live that legacy....
The Truth Will Set You Free
Reyes death should not be a hindrance to find the truth about corruption in the military. Set aside sentiments. The corruption affected all military personnel not only the Reyes and his family. Seeking the truth must go on.
AFP
Reyes' death was futile. If one is going to commit suicide might as well tell the truth who the higher up was, was it GMA? He committed suicide to protect his family. So no respect for that. He might have had a good voice, he might have been a good father, he might have been a good solider in the beginning, but all these means nothing when ur legacy was mired by corruption. The ultimate sacrifice was to tell the truth kahit masakit gawin. Then u r truly a hero. Besides, suicide is not the answer. kasi nasa PINAS naman sya, ano bang anomaly sa gov't ang nagkaroon ng justice, fertilizer scam, etc, me nangyari ba? Wala, so sayang ang buhay nya, kasalanan pa sa Dios. My gosh! those wives are ganid like their husbands. Where is their conscience seeing the taongbayan naghihirap, tapos sila arteng mga social. Jet setting, buying houses, akala mo kung umasta pinaghirapan nila ang mga pera na yon. Sa impierno ang punta ninyo! Makes me want to puke. As for those senators who grilled him, except maybe for some like Trillanes or Santiago, they r laughable, why, coz they r galit sa kapwa magnanakaw ng kaban ng PINAS. Estrada, Enrile? WHAT! u have the guts to question Reyes? When u urselves enriched ur family thru corruption and intimidation? Now Estrada wants Reyes' family off the hook, bakit nakokonsiensya ka na dahil u realized u and ur family were in the same shoes as Reyes'?
So pati BIR officials, isali sa dapat imbestigahan. Marami akong alam na yumaman dahil nakaupo sa BIR. That's one area of gov't institution that is very corrupt.
Stop Corruption
For years, we all want corruption to stop. This is our chance to find the thieves to steal our tax money. Continue the Senate Inquiry. I agree with the Inquirer article that Corruption Killed Angelo Reyes. Their family should return the stolen tax money that comes from hard working Filipinos who pay taxes.
SANA LANG PO MATULOY ANG
SANA LANG PO MATULOY ANG HEARING AT IPATAWAG LAHAT NG DAPAT IPATAWAG PATI ANG ASAWA NI ANGELO REYES
BKIT BA KELANGAN PANG IPATIGIL NI JINGGOY NA HINDI IPATAWAG ANG ASAWA NI REYES GAYONG CYA ANG MAKAKASAGOT NG ILAN SA MGA KATANUNGAN LIKE MGA BYAHE SA LABAS NG BANSA KASAMA SI MRS LIGOT....
PLS LANG PO SANA WAG MAPUNTA SA WALA ANG LAHAT NG ITO
LALONG LALO NA ANG PAG KAMATAY NI REYES
incomplete
The investigation on graft and corruption in the AFP should not end with the suicide of Reyes. The government should continue investigating the family of Reyes especially the wife. They should also pursue other corrupt officials during Reyes's stint as Chief of Staff of the AFP like his then Commander in Chief Mrs. Arroyo.
