MANILA - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday said it has spotted posters of senatorial candidates Francis Escudero and Sonny Angara in prohibited areas in Manila.

Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said campaign posters of party-list groups Kabataan, Gabriela, Akap Bata, Anakpawis and LPGMA were also found in violation of campaign rules during a documentation tour of Taft Avenue, Sta. Ana and Sta Mesa, Manila.

The tour was kept a surprise till the last minute to avoid losing the element of surprise.

Jimenez and his team took note of the posters so the candidates may be notified to remove the posters or be held liable for election offenses.

Jimenez noted that while there were posters in prohibited areas, there were none in the designated common poster areas in Plaza Dilao in Manila as well as a vacant lot at the corner of Magsaysay and V Mapa.

Candidates have 3 days upon receipt of the notice to remove the posters or be held liable.

Jimenez also found Kabataan party-list posters inside the PUP campus in Manila, which is another prohibited area.

He maintained that they are only taking note of campaigns for national positions.

The Comelec remains powerless to go after local candidates till the start of their campaign period in late March.

Jimenez said the Comelec presumes that all posters are the candidates' own doing especially if it benefits them or has their name or face.

Jimenez went around with his team from the EID and Comelec beat media.
