MANILA, Philippines - Senate President and Presiding Officer Juan Ponce Enrile turned 88 on Tuesday.
Asked what he wishes for himself on his 88th birthday, he said: "My wish is for God to give me the stamina and divine light to do what is right in the remaining years of my life."
He also told the impeachment trial court that he will continue to work, birthday or no birthday.
He earlier told House lead prosecutor Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. that he was no longer looking at birthdays but his future, which is dimming.
A picture taken by Senate pool photographer Joseph Vidal showed Enrile smiling as Senate reporters presented him a cake with miniature images of the senator-judges.
Enrile has earned praise for his strict conduct of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
He earlier said he will not allow himself to be used by anyone in the trial, nor issue an unjust ruling. He said he is willing to give up his seat if anyone is dissatisfied with how he has presided over the trial.
"Wala akong kinikilala, wala akong kinikilingan. Wala akong kinikilalang amo kundi ang taumbayan...Hindi ako magiging kasangkapan ng kahit sinuman," he said.
