Trial adjourns early due to Valentine's Day
MANILA, Philippines - Citing their wishes to be with their loved ones on Valentine's Day, the prosecution and defense panels in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona asked for an early “cessation” of the proceedings.
After the trial resumed following a short break requested by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas immediately took the floor and appealed for an early adjournment of the trial.
“Today is February 14, it’s also your [Enrile's] natal day…Baka pwedeng ibigay niyo na ang araw na ito para makapiling namin ang aming mga mahal sa buhay,” he said.
He later asked Enrile, who turned 88 today, for a “declaration of cessation of hostilities.”
Lead prosecutor Niel Tupas Jr. said: “We join the manifestation of the defense.”
Enrile then said, “Peace be with you.”
Senator-judge Francis Pangilinan also gave his peace, saying: “The work [Enrile] has done, able to steer the procedures, he deserves an early adjournment of trial.”
Enrile, who has been getting praises from many quarters for his handling of the trial, said: “Thank you for being kind to a man in the pre-departure room.”
The 83-year-old Cuevas, however, said: “Huwag naman po.”
The 17th day of trial lasted for two-and-a-half hours, one of the shortest since the trial began in January 16.

Ang makakasagot lang nyan ay kung buksan ni Corona lahat ng account nya. Kung wala namang illegal dapat pumayag syang ipakita ang lahat para matapos na ang batuhan. Di na kailangan ibase sa batas o technicality o gamitin ang SC - kung talagang malinis si Corona, ipakita nya sa lahat ang account nya, lalo na sa mga iniisip nyang bias na judge. Ang masama takot sya at nagtatago rin ng katotohanan. Sabi nya ipapakita nya at the right time. Bakit hindi ngayon na lang para matapos ang boxing.
