Lagman hits minority for weak impeach bid vs PNoy
MANILA, Philippines - Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman on Wednesday advised his former colleagues in the House minority to choose more relevant and pressing issues against the Aquino administration.
In a statement, he said that the public auction sale of the government's property in Baguio City was a transaction that happened as early as 1992.
He said that it is a relic which should be consigned to the archives rather than exhumed as a possible ground for impeachment of President Aquino since it is bereft of legal and factual anchorage.
Lagman explained that the execution of the deed of absolute sale by President Aquino on September 16, 2011 in favor of the winning bidder and purchaser, the SM Group, which fully paid the purchase price in 1997, was only a confirmation of the legal transaction and mandated by law.
For his part, Minority Leader Danilo Suarez admitted that the complaint might be weak and flawed but said that the minority will still continue to review the case. He said the minority will come up with a decision on Monday whether they would endorse the complaint or not.
In the complaint, businessman Danilo Lihaylihay said Aquino is guilty of betrayal of public trust for approving the sale of the burned down Pines Hotel for P69 million to SM Group. He claimed the market value of the land allegedly amounts to P1.4 billion to P1.7 billion.
