UNA to LP: No yellow immunity in anti-corruption
MANILA, Philippines – The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) has turned the tables on the Liberal Party (LP), saying the ruling party is the one harboring “pretenders” in its political coalition.
UNA alleged that the ruling party is harboring “political butterflies” who used to side with former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo but are now part of LP.
“LP has in its arms countless political butterflies who doused their entire bodies in dirty money during the time of GMA but are now wearing yellow. If the administration is really serious in its anti-corruption campaign, there should be no ‘sacred cows’--kapartido ka man o hindi,” UNA secretary general, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco, said in a statement released on Saturday.
“Anti-corruption should apply to all and there should be no ‘yellow immunity’ even to those yellow-come-latelies in LP,” he added.
In his speeches, President Benigno Aquino III has warned the public of "pretenders" who also harp on the mantra of "daang matuwid."
'Mellow on yellow'
Tiangco also accused the administration of being “mellow on yellow” and questioned if joining LP gives alleged corrupt officials immunity.
“The Liberal Party must be more cautious and should have scrutinized their members who served under the GMA administration before accepting them to the party—or is joining the LP an assurance of immunity?” he said.
Tiangco particularly called out LP spokesman Miro Quimbo, who he said should face the issue involving the P7 billion Globe Asiatique “scam.”
“UNA has always been emphatic in saying that we support the reforms of the President. Had it not been for these reforms which VP Binay implemented in the housing sector, hindi mabibisto ang Globe Asiatique scam of Delfin Lee which was committed during Quimbo's watch at PAGIBIG,” said Tiangco.
He also questioned LP’s stand on Quimbo’s responsibility on the loan housing loan scandal.
“Quimbo cannot excuse himself from the Delfin Lee scam that caused the government billions of pesos and victimized hapless families. LP should review its brand messaging because there is an obvious mismatch between the message and the messenger. The issue is corruption. Speak out on your stand,” Tiangco said.
