MANILA - President Aquino is gambling big by playing an active role in the campaign of Team PNoy, a coalition made up of independent bets and candidates of various political parties.

In an interview with radio dzMM, veteran public relations practitioner Reli German said “the endorsement of a sitting president has a big impact, but is also a gamble on the part of [Aquino].”

He said a big win in the May 13 elections for the candidates of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), a coalition assembled by Vice President Jejomar Binay and former President Joseph Estrada, will not bode well for Aquino.

“It will be bad for the image of President Aquino, who has three years left in the post. In effect, he will become a lame duck president,” he said. This is probably the reason why Aquino has been doing the rounds of rallies of Team PNoy.

Team PNoy earlier said Aquino may join 80% of the coalition's events aimed at courting the support of voters.

The spokespersons of Team PNoy have also been saying that Aquino’s popularity will trickle down to his handpicked candidates, some of whom were in opposing camps in the 2010 elections.

Aquino still enjoys good public satisfaction ratings, based on the latest surveys of Social Weather Stations and Pulse Asia.

But German does not believe Aquino’s popularity has rubbed off on Team PNoy candidates. “They have a problem with their composition,” he said.

This is unlike Estrada’s influence, said political analyst Malou Tiquia. “Mas madali kung si [Estrada] and even [Binay].”

She cited a study which says Estrada can easily pull ten to 15 million votes, which may trickle down to UNA candidates.

Estrada, she added, is strong among the residents of Mindanao.

The latest Pulse Asia survey conducted last month shows 7 candidates of Team PNoy in the top 12.

They are: Loren Legarda, Chiz Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, Antonio Trillanes, Koko Pimentel, Cynthia Villar, and Sonny Angara.

The 5 from UNA in the top 12 are: Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito, Jack Enrile, Migz Zubiri, Gringo Honasan.

Legarda and Escudero are also guest candidates of UNA.
