Arroyo a curse for Gibo in race for presidency

MANILA, Philippines - President Gloria Arroyo saw her intelligent, articulate defense chief, Gilberto Teodoro, as an ideal successor, but her blessing appears to be turning into a curse.

Despite impressing even his opponents with his command of national issues, the licensed commercial pilot and Harvard law school graduate has barely registered in opinion polls ahead of presidential elections in May.

Many link Teodoro's dismal popularity ratings to his association with Arroyo, a hugely unpopular figure who has been accused of vote fraud and corruption -- a point he candidly admits he can now do little about.

"You can't win them all. There are some situations where you just have to accept where you are. You just have to live with it," Teodoro, 45, told Agence France-Presse on the campaign trail this month when asked about Arroyo hurting his chances.

Highlighting just how poisonous Arroyo appears to be for Teodoro, a national survey released this week by a reputable polling firm found that 52 percent of Filipinos would not vote for a candidate endorsed by the current president.

Another 22 percent said they would probably not vote for Arroyo's candidate.

"He has this baggage with the Arroyo administration that has been viewed very negatively to the point of being hated by some sectors," said Olivia Domingo, a professor of public administration at the University of the Philippines.

Teodoro placed fourth in the latest independent survey of presidential candidates, selected by only five percent of respondents as their choice.

His distant cousin, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino, and wealthy property developer Manny Villar were virtually tied in the lead with 37 and 35 percent respectively.

Former president Joseph Estrada was third with 12 percent.

Teodoro's reception this month at the influential Makati Business Club, a group known to be hostile to Arroyo, highlighted his woes.

Teodoro earned plaudits from listeners with his detailed plans on healthcare, education and economic development, but they remained sceptical.

"He is a very impressive person. But it is a pity he is associated with somebody who is, to our minds, not a very impressive leader," said club member and former finance secretary Ramon del Rosario.

Club president Alberto Lim also praised Teodoro, who at age 43 was appointed by Arroyo to become the nation's youngest-ever defense chief in 2007.

"He is articulate, his record is quite clean," Lim said.

"But he is linked to Gloria Arroyo and we don't want to have anything to do with Gloria Arroyo. That is why his ratings are so low."

In public, Teodoro has remained loyal to Arroyo -- who is required by the Constitution to step down this year -- and tried to focus on an upbeat message that largely also avoided attacking his rivals.

"We are running a positive campaign. We have to be positive. You have to lift the morale of the people. You have to lift their spirits," he told AFP.

Teodoro also insisted he could still win when the 50 million voters across this Southeast Asian archipelago went to the polls, while trying to point to other factors than Arroyo for his poor ratings.

"Our studies show that it is a lack of exposure which is affecting me," he said, adding this was being addressed by an advertising campaign and his own sorties to vote-rich provinces.

"We'll have immersion in more densely populated areas. We have to touch as many areas as possible."

He also believes that the much-trumpeted machinery of the ruling Lakas Kampi CMD, which has local candidates in about 80 percent of the country, will be able to secure him large swathes of votes.

Other major parties only had candidates in about 40 percent of all local seats, he said.

Domingo, from the University of the Philippines, also said Teodoro had gained quite a following among the nation's youth, especially the college crowd, who were impressed by his intelligent performances in debates.

But she said, with Arroyo casting a shadow over him, Teodoro's election fate looked to be sealed.

"He has to do something that will really capture people's imagination despite the fact that he has this connection with Arroyo. But I don't know what that winning formula is," she said.

WHATEVER U DO U LOSE

MAJORITY OF THE FILIPINO VOTERS HATE CORRUPTION AND SELF AGGRANDIZEMENT. HENCE, WHAT EVER YOU DO TO CLEAR YOURSELF FROM THE MISDEMEANOR OF MEN AND WOMEN IN MALACANIANG TODAY, YOU REMAIN EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

He should ask GMA to back out from running!?

Gibo who is a smart and good personality with best “resume” among today’s candidates for presidency has wrong time in a wrong party. If ever he is not associated with GMA and the trapos Lakas-Kampi he has big chance to win this coming national elections May 10,2010. This is the reality that Gibo’s rating will not soaring high. It’s association to this administration is a “kiss of death” for his Presidential dream. He is the next administration’s candidate to follow the footsteps of former Speakers Ramon Mitra and Jose De Venicia, Jr., all losers!

GMA’s desire to continue running as representative of Pampanga only signifies that they have unfinished political plan to rule the country more longer. This made the Filipino electorates suspecting them a conspiracy to make charter change making GMA as Speaker then Prime Minister after 2010 national elections.
He should ask GMA to back out!..because a "vote for Gibo" means to support this plan!?.....

@bantaygob

If GT who has a better personality, smarter and skillful than any of the candidates, yet you think he's still gago and tanga, what are you then?

Scenario

Ang plano ay bago mag Abril, aatras si GT. He will endorse MV.

GT = Gago Tanga

G.T.

Unfortunately, it's too difficult to justify Teodoro at this time after what has happened during Ondoy and in Maguindanao. People with high standards will just not vote him. It does not matter how much he does if all that he did was "after the fact". That's how it is and that's life.

But I hope that if he is using much of his money (and not Arroyo's or Villar's .. being a decoy for them), that he stops since it will only go down the drain. His money will be needed for his 2016 campaign.

And to help you people who likes Gibo as I do, here is what we should urge him to do after the elections:
1. Dissociate himself from Kampi party and the Arroyos. Be an independent or form another party. He should not join LP, NPC, or NP since that will just make people think he is a turncoat.
2. Lead a very worthy NGO. Something related to Disaster Relief or Private Army Disarmament. Be aggresive in it and strive for visible and sustainable success.
3. Be close to the poor and the activists and be a strong defender of them.
4. Press the AFP and the Police to strive harder to deserve the love and trust of the people.
5. Be an INTEGRITY (anti-corruption) advocate. He should distance himself from highly questionable people.
6. Run for President in the next election.
If he does all the above, Roxas will face a tough competition in 2016. When he wins, the Philippines is on its direction to be a much greater country again.

For now, someone else has to pave the way for him.

No giving up

Gibo has been consistent with the issue of putting Pres. Arroyo on trial for abuse of power and graft cases, that he will let the justice system work and sets its own course if somebody files cases against her. He knows that nobody should get involved in any courts' proceedings and that is just recognizing the Supreme Court as co-equal branch of the state. Kahit sino man ang maupo at nakialam sa justice, then it is meddling but if a President doesn't do anything, then we'll say he's taking sides. Sala sa init sala sa lamig, nobody will be a good president anymore if most of us will doubt and be pessimistic. For now, there is only one direction for us to go and that is forward and I believe that Mr. Gibo can lead us there.

Good man on the wrong side

He's a good man. Unfortunately he's on the wrong side. After the elections, I hope he wakes up and realizes, redeems, and proves himself. Then, he would just be what the Philippines needs for 2016.
