Rotating blackouts hit Luzon
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE 2) - Parts of Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon experienced two-hour to three-hour scheduled blackouts on Monday after power plants in Sual, Pangasinan and Masinloc, Zambales failed to provide sufficient power for the Luzon grid.
In an advisory, Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said the system condition for the line system for Monday is red. "The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) advised that there will be a rotational brownout today, Monday, March 1, between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. due to a boiler tube leak of Sual 1 and Masinloc," the advisory said.
Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldariagga said some of the areas experiencing power outages as of 12 p.m. are parts of Alfonso and Bacoor in Cavite and Tagaytay City. He said Meralco has yet to receive word from the NGCP that the power shortfall will be addressed.
"We are hoping that there will be some improvement but being a distribution utility, we are not in a position to determine what the power supply will be tomorrow. We rely on the announcement of the system operator, which is the NGCP," he told ANC's Dateline Philipines.
A separate NGCP advisory said the Luzon grid now has a generation deficiency of 478 megawatts.
"Metro Manila and Luzon residents are advised to coordinate directly with their respective distribution utilities and electric cooperatives for information on the power interruption schedule and list of specific areas which will experience temporary power outage," the NGCP said.
The NGCP said the Visayas grid has a generation deficiency of 45 megawatts. "Salcon Power's Cebu Thermal Power Plant Unit 1 is operational and already loaded with 48 MW but Unit 2 with a rated capacity of 55 MW is under preventive maintenance shutdown. Estimated completion date of maintenance works is on March 7,' it said.
The NGCP said Mindanao wil continue to experience rotating blackouts after the El Niño phenomenon affected the output of hydro power plants.
BEFORE MAY 2010 ELECTION
The minds of the Filipinos were conditioned on rotating power blockouts before May 2010 election. The proposed computerized election might be futile. Can these election computer machines be used for the purpose if power blockouts remained unremedied?
aysus!
pghahanda n ng gobyerno to para sa malawakang pandaraya sa eleksyon! kunwari brownout! hehe, kawawang pilipino, plgi n lng dinudugasan!
it is coming to hunt !!
It will only go worse before getting any better. Oil prices are going up, up and up. Coal powered plants are the "dirty air" for the environment and do-gooders governments and nuclear plants will take forever to build. at least 10 year the fastest and Billions of $$$ of investment. now where do you go when people are increasing too fast and too quick and the demand for electricity and water and staples outstrips the supply by a mile or so? a dilemma for the next President and another dig in the pocket for the taxpayers and perhaps the best time for everyone to at lest Moderate the Greed.

Pag nanalo isang presidente, wala na blackouts; or significant reductions, at least. Manny problems.
It's good that here in Cebu
It's good that here in Cebu we haven't encountered any rotating Blackouts yet. But in my wifes hometown in Mindanao, the blackouts are terrible. We should try to save power as much as we can to avoid more power shortage.
