Melo wants Acosta out of presidential race
MANILA, Philippines - Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Jose Melo said that if it were up to him, he may just disqualify Vetellano Acosta from the presidential race because he doesn't seem to be a serious candidate for president.
Acosta, standard-bearer of the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL), has not been campaigning and has not participated in any of the presidential debates.
In a recent report by the Philippine Star, Acosta admitted not knowing KBL’s vice presidential bet, broadcaster Jay Sonza, or the party’s senatorial lineup, since he was alone when he filed his certificate of candidacy.
Sonza disowned Acosta in a rally in Sta. Maria, Bulacan, saying the presidential contender is not serious and has, in fact, been hiding since the campaign period officially began earlier this month.
During a recent radio interview, Acosta gave no specific answers on possible solutions to the problem of insurgency, or to such vital issues as Charter change and the Visiting Forces Agreement.
Acosta also could not say if he will support the senatorial bid of Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. or the congressional bid of his mother Imelda. -- with reports from Philippine Star; RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
