Comelec won't ban bets in grad rites
MANILA - Candidates won't get into trouble with the Commission on Elections if they campaign during graduation ceremonies, Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said Monday.
However, the poll chief noted that schools who invite candidates to campaign during graduation rites may have a problem with the Department of Education.
"Pwede naman mangampanya sa graduation. Form of campaigning magkaka-liability eskwelahan. May circular na and [Department of Education] diyan. It's a good deterrent for them na di sila mag imbita ng pulitiko," he said.
Brillantes said inviting politicians to grad rites helps in their campaign. "Pag nagi-imbita ka ng politician parang tumutulong ka," he said.
Last February 14, 2013, the DepEd issued memorandum circular number 9, series of 2013, which said: "The graduation rites should be conducted in an appropriate solemn ceremony befitting the graduating students and their parents and shall not be used as political forum."
