MANILA -- Malacañang assured the public that the abolition of government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) will not lead to a cover-up of evidence in the pork barrel scam.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said documents will be preserved and that the abolition will not be a way of hiding anomalies.

"It was not the reason for abolishing them," he said.

Earlier this week, the Governance Commission for GOCCs (GCG) announced the abolition of 11 GOCCs including some which were allegedly used as conduits for lawmakers' priority development assistance funds (PDAF) that were part of the pork barrel scam.

The GCG said that of the 116 GOCCs, about 20 more will be abolished to bring down the number of remaining GOCCs to just under 100.
