MANILA - Senator JV Ejercito on Friday apologized to the public for calling "ungas" (stupid) and "duwag" (coward) a Twitter user who got on his nerves while a Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on the pork barrel scam was being held.

In a statement, Ejercito admitted that he snapped at the person who heckled him regarding his line of questioning during the hearing on Thursday.

The Twitter user, @juke27, sent a copy of Ejercito's direct message to him.

Ejercito, a son of former President and current Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, admitted sending the private message and expressed regret at losing his cool.

"While the hearing was on going, I read my Twitter and a certain person was continuously bashing me. I admit I snapped and sent him a direct message. Soon after, I twitted an apology in general to the netizens for my action," he said.

He said other Twitter users understood his situation. "There are just a handful of regular bashers who took advantage of the situation."

He urged people using social media to exercise responsibility and respect.

"I am glad that a lot of people I did not expect to show their support did (when this happened). Tao lang po ako. Let's all practice responsibility and respect online," he said.

He told ABS-CBNNews.com Thursday night that he often engages in discussions on the microblogging site but respects each others' positions.

When advised to disengage from Twitter and take a deep breath when the discussions become personal or too heated, Ejercito said "bashers are just a handful."

"There is no need for that. There are far more objective and decent people here naman," he said.
