DOJ forms panel on Atimonan rubout complaint

MANILA - The Department of Justice (DOJ) has constituted a panel of prosecutors to conduct the preliminary investigation of the complaint for multiple murder and obstruction of justice against several policemen and soldiers responsible for the blood bath in Atimonan, Quezon last Jan. 6 that resulted in the deaths of 13 people.

Prosecutor General Claro Arellano designated the following state prosecutors to the panel:

  • Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Theodore Villanueva (chairman)
  • City Prosecutor Vimar Barcellano
  • Asst. State Prosecutor Hazel Decena-Valdez
  • Asst. State Prosecutor Niven Canlapan
  • Prosecution Attorney Cesar Angelo Chavez III

A support team was also formed by Arellano comprised of Assistant State Prosecutors Mari Elvira Herrera, Jinky Dedumo, and Katheryn May Penaco-Rojas.

Arellano will have direct supervision over both teams.

Earlier today, multiple murder charges were filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), along with the fatalities' kin, against the following:

The respondents were responsible for the supposed checkpoint operation that took place which was dubbed by the NBI and Malacanan as a "rubout."
