MANILA, Philippines - Unexpected rotating power interruptions hit parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Quezon on Saturday morning.

Power plants simultaneously broke down in Limay, Bataan, the Malaya plant in Rizal, and Sual, Pangasinan.

If power outages hit Luzon again on Sunday, fans of boxing champ Manny Pacquiao are worried they might miss Pacquiao's fight against Joshua Clottey.

But the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) assured the public there will be enough power supply in Luzon on Sunday.

Power was restored Saturday afternoon with the recovery of the power plants in Limay and Sual.

Engr. Jesusito Sulit of the NGCP said viewers will be able to watch Pacquiao's fight against Clottey uninterrupted if they are in Luzon or the Visayas.

It's a different story for the larger part of Mindanao, he said.

The power system may not be able to accomodate the anticipated rise of power demand on the day of Pacquiao's boxing match.

The NGCP said the Mindanao grid continues to experience generation deficiency, due to the limited capacities of NPC's hydropower plants.

The plants' water reservoirs are drying up due to the El Niño phenomenon.

However, the NGCP said Pacquiao's hometown will be spared from power interruption on Sunday.

The General Santos City stadium is being readied for the live telecast of the boxing match, which is good news for Pacquiao's kababayans.

But for one Twitter follower, more than assuring enough power supply on Pacquiao's fight day, authorities should make sure there would be enough power to run the counting machines on election day. -- By Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
