MANILA (1st UPDATE) - After a long drought, a University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law graduate has topped the 2013 Bar exams.

Nielson Pangan of UP is the first placer with a grade of 85.8%.

There are five UP graduates in the top 10, including Mark Xavier Oyales, who is tied for 2nd place.

Pangan’s top ranking shows UP’s efforts to reclaim its dominance of the Bar exams could be working.

Joan de Venecia was the last UP graduate who topped the Bar in 2005.

UP had always been expected to take the top spot.

The last few years, however, saw graduates of Ateneo and other law schools get the top spots.

Cesareo Antonio Singzon Jr., Raoul Angelo Atadero, and Ignatius Ingles topped the Bar exams in 2010, 2011, and 2012 respectively. They are all from Ateneo de Manila.

Because of its drought, UP Law changed its strategy when it comes to training students.

Law electives have been scrapped to give way to Bar exam reviews.

This year’s top 10 examinees are:
