Time to start Malampaya scam probe: Cayetano
MANILA - Senator Alan Peter Cayetano is urging his colleagues in the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to finally start the investigation into the P900 million Malampaya fund scam.
In a statement, Cayetano said: "This is another atrocity that has been committed against the Filipino people who are still in outrage over the P10-billion pork barrel scandal. Dapat nating malaman kung sino ang mga ito at parusahan."
The Malampaya fund scam refers to the alleged use of aid for farmers affected by Tropical Storm Ondoy and Typhoon Pepeng in 2009 that ended up in the pockets of the corrupt.
The Malampaya funds are the annual profit the government makes from the Malampaya gas field off Palawan.
Whistle-blowers in the alleged P10 billion pork barrel scam earlier revealed businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles was able to pocket the funds with the help of corrupt government officials.
Merlina Suñas, the staff of Janet Lim Napoles who handled the Malampaya account, said they forged the signatures of Mayor Vicente Esguerra of Pulilan, Bulacan and 96 other mayors to make it appear the farmers will benefit from the P900-million Malampaya funds, which the DAR allocated for agricultural projects.
Meanwhile, Cayetano said there should already be a partial report on the pork scam, and then the Senate can proceed to this next one.
"Hiningi ko sa kanya [Blue Ribbon chair Teofisto Guingona III] na dinggin at simulan ang hearing sa Malampaya scam para ang bawat isyu na lumabas ay ma-imbestigahan upang makita ng mamamayan kung sino ang mga nangungurakot at kung saan napupunta ang pondo."
