ZAMBOANGA (AFP) - Security forces shot dead an Islamic extremist in an operation in the southern Philippine island of Jolo on Friday, the military said.

The alleged member of the Islamic militant Abu Sayyaf was tracked down and killed in a firefight near the town of Patikul, said Marine Colonel Natalio Ecarma, commander of the military unit involved in the fighting.

Jolo is a stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, blamed for the country's worst terrorist attacks.

The military said the group was set up in the early 1990s with seed funds provided by a brother-in-law of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and has since waged a bombing and kidnapping campaign in the Philippines.
