MANILA - The United Nationalist Alliance on Friday quashed speculations that their party is behind the revelations of Heart Evangelista's parents against Team PNoy candidate Sen. Francis Escudero.

UNA senatorial candidate Nancy Binay was shocked when asked to comment on rumors that the coalition had something to do with the Ongpaucos' revelations. She said it is not their character to attack politicians on a personal level.

"Galing sa amin? Bakit naman kami mag stoop down sa ganong level? For what?" Binay said.

Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile, son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, said UNA does not want to interfere with the love lives of other people.

Candidate Ernesto Maceda said the rumors were preposterous. "That's preposterous! Its a big lie, a big [figment] of the imagination!" he said.

Asked about the Ongpaucos' revelations, San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito Estrada merely quipped: "No comment pero hindi ako nagtataka."

Escudero, who is running for re-election, earlier accused former president Joseph Estrada of campaigning against him by asking mayors not to support his candidacy. Estrada is one of the three leaders of UNA.

In the recent controversy, Escudero was accused by Evangelista's mother, Cecile Ongpauco, of being a drunk and for showing disrespect to their family.

Ongpauco said Escudero was manipulating Evangelista, whom they described as naive and overprotected.

Escudero admitted that he has been affected by the controversy but denied showing any disrespect to the Ongpaucos. He said Evangelista's parents simply want them to break up.
