Massive congressional support for Marcos hero's burial
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday thanked lawmakers at the House of Representatives who signed the resolution asking that his father, the later former President Ferdinand Marcos, be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
"Nagpapasalamat ako sa inyong lahat sa inyong tulong, sa inyong suporta. Kahit papano, ang resolution na 'yan ng mga kongresista ay kailangang pakinggan," Marcos told reporters.
Sorsogon Rep. Salvador Escudero earlier led some 204 lawmakers at the House of Representatives in signing a resolution urging President Aquino to allow the burial of the remains of Marcos – for years in a refrigerated crypt in Ilocos – at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
'Hypocrisy'
Amid the massive congressional support for the resolution, however, are some lawmakers who thumbed it down.
Progressive Party List Lawmakers thumbed down the proposal to allow Former President Ferdinand Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
This amid massive congressional support for a House Resolution urging President Aquino to allow the burial.
Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares called it "a hypocrisy" since the Aquino government is also pushing for a bill compensating victims of human rights abuses during the Marcos year.
ACT Teachers Party-List Rep. Antonio Tinio also declined to sign it.
House Speaker Sonny Belmonte was ambivalent to it. Belmonte says he found out about the resolution only last night. He says it’s a free expression of
people’s views.
Belmonte said Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos, widow of the former president, has not spoken to him about the matter.
Binay in-charge
President Aquino has assigned Vice-President Jejomar Binay to form a committee that will study the issue of a hero's burial for Marcos.
“We will leave that to the Vice President to study the matter, and with respect to the resolution authored by Congressman (Salvador) Escudero,” said presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda.
Escudero served as agriculture minister of Marcos until his ouster.
Escudero’s son, Sen. Francis Escudero, is a close ally of President Aquino.
Binay, on the other hand, was detained during the Marcos regime for his work as a human rights lawyer.
“It is up to Vice President Binay and his committee to make the decision after their study and also the resolution they (congressmen) made,” he said, in light of President Aquino’s decision to inhibit himself from the issue.
“The President already mentioned why he would like to desist from making a decision on that. In fact, he has already commissioned and asked the Vice President to make a stand, and formed a committee to study that proposal,” Lacierda added.
Binay’s media relations officer Joey Salgado said the Vice President would consult with different political parties and non-government organizations in the country regarding the proposed hero’s burial for Marcos.
Martial law
Marcos was elected president in 1965 and was re-elected for a second term in 1969. Before the end of his second term, he imposed martial law in 1972 and stayed as president until 1986 when he was deposed by a bloodless People Power revolt.
He died in exile in 1989 but has yet to be buried. His remains are preserved in the family's mausoleum in Batac City.
President Aquino has refused to comment on the issue of giving Marcos a hero's burial. Aquino has maintained that Marcos ordered the murder of his father, the late Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., in 1983. With a report from the Philippine Star, and Ryan Chua and RG Cruz of ABS-CBN News
The Filipinos has short memories
Amazingly, the Pinoys forgot the lessons so quickly. They suffered under Marcos dictatorships, made themselves the poorest country of South East Asia. When they got the victory in kicking him out of the country, they felt so blessed. And that was a blessing. Now they want this same dictator to be buried like a hero, what happened to their memories?
Who are these 204 congressmen? Publish the list!
So, ABS-CBN News, you have been bannering this news item for over a week now, and people have been clamoring for the list of those 204 congressmen who wanted a Libingan ng mga Bayani burial for the dictator Marcos!
Who are these 204 congressmen? Why can't you publish this list, the same way you published the vote count on the Ombudsam Gutierrez impeachment issue!
Libingan Ng Mga Kurakot
The government should build another cemetery and call it Libingan Ng Mga Kurakot for the sole purpose of internment to those who abused their power during their term for public services. Marcos, Reyes and in the future, Arroyo and Gutierrez should be buried at such. This will resolve all these arguments.
The greatest President of the
The greatest President of the Philippines deserves every right to be buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Burry Him Where he Belongs
Burry Marcos where he belongs....in an eternal fire pit.
Altzheimer's Disease
The lawmakers who signed the resolution to bury Ferdie at Libingan ng Mga Bayani is sick with amnesia or altzheimer's disease. It will not be surprising if Erap will request to be buried there too.
Just bury Pres. Marcos' sa
Just bury Pres. Marcos' sa libingan ng mga bayani and get over it and move on. there are serious issues to be solved in our country especially poverty. Pres Marcos was not a bad politician. he did something good for our country. He constructed roads (linking a city to a very rural town) during his time and until now we benefit from it. But since its construction, no politician has improved it because they were too busy with their corrupt practices.
Marcos burial
Re: Massive congressional support for Marcos hero's burial
No worries, just uproot his mausoleum in Ilocos Norte and transport it to the Libingan where his family wants him buried.
Let's see which congressmen voted for FM's burial at LNM!
C'mon, BongBong and ANS-CBN, you call it "massive congressional support for Marcos'hero burial," so let's go find out the names of those congressmen who voted for this dictator to be buried alongside the likes of Quezon, Osmena, Recto, etc.
Let's have that list published for the whole nation to see! We dare you now to publish it!
Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani? Hah! Ninoy and Cory were genuine heroes of our nation, and yet their family never insisted to have them buried at the LNM!
Shame on the Marcoses! Kapal-muks po talaga!
