MANILA, Philippines -- A Palace spokesperson defended President Benigno Aquino III on Sunday, saying he is capable of doing multiple tasks while at the same time attending to administration candidates’ sorties.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte downplayed criticisms that Aquino should leave the campaigning to the candidates themselves in order to attend to the power shortage in Mindanao.

She said Aquino is on top of things. “Our people can be assured that the President is perfectly capable of addressing multiple issues on a daily basis, and has been doing so since he assumed office in 2010,” she said.

Poll stakeholders led by the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) fear that some quarters will take advantage of the current power shortage in Mindanao to sabotage the automated polls.

Senatorial candidate Teddy Casiño chimed in, saying Aquino, as the president, “should serve as the nation’s father but as the people can see, it seems he has different priorities.”

Team PNoy candidate and re-electionist Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III, meanwhile, criticized UNA for insinuating that the administration may rig the elections.

"To insinuate that the administration is drawing up plans to rig the outcome of the May 13 polls is, to say the least, preposterous, considering that the Aquino government has been the proponent of the 'daang matuwid.' President Aquino would be the last person to encourage that," Pimentel said.
