MANILA - Sympathizers of Benito Tiamzon and his wife, Wilma, trooped to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday to denounce their arrest over the weekend.

The group, composed of 21 individuals from the Tambuli ng Mamamayan Network, Kilusang Mayo Uno-Manila, and Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap-Metro Manila, lamented how the DOJ is "being used by the current administration in filing criminal charges against individuals who are fighting for the rights of the majority, such as the Tiamzons."

The group said the DOJ is doing nothing to prosecute the "real criminals" such as those who are within government and pocketing public funds.

They called on government to immediately release the couple, as well as other "political prisoners."

They also called on government to stop its harassment of Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) peace consultants.

Benito is the chairman of the CPP-NPA, while Wilma is its secretary-general. They were arrested by a composite team from the AFP and PNP in Aloguinsan, Cebu.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said both were arrested on the basis of two valid arrest warrants.
