Villar demands apology from critics for saying he's not poor
MANILA, Philippines - Nacionalista Party (NP) presidential candidate Manny Villar on Tuesday said his detractors and presidential "blue-bloods" should apologize for saying that his family was not as poor as portrayed in his TV ads.
Villar issued the challenge after copies of the death certificate of his brother, Danny, as well as the transfer certificate of title (TCT) of the Villar home in San Rafael Village in Navotas started circulating online and was quoted in newspaper columns since Saturday.
Villar, who is currently ranked 2nd in the presidential race according to pre-election surveys, has repeatedly talked about his humble roots as a former shrimp vendor in Manila's Tondo slum.
In one of his TV ads, he said his brother, Danny, died because they could not afford healthcare.
Billy Esposo, one of the columnists who disclosed documents allegedly debunking Villar's once-poor claim, said Danny's death certificate showed that the family brought him to FEU Hospital, a hospital for rich people in 1962.
After Danny died, the Villars allegedly turned over the body to Funeraria Paz, one of the top two mortuaries in those days.
Since Danny was diagnosed with leukemia, Esposo said there was no way he could be saved since there was no bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy in those days. "Whether you're super rich or whether you're super poor, you died from leukemia," he said.
Villar, however, said he saw no problem with bringing his brother to a private hospital in an attempt to save his life.
"Mamamatay na ang kapatid ko, masama bang dalhin siya sa ospital? Kahit pa pribado yan. Kung mamatay na ang kapatid mo, dadalhin mo yan sa ospital. Walang masama doon. Hindi masama sa isang mahirap na magdala ng kanyang mamamatay na kapatid sa ospital pag oras ng kamatayan" he asked.
The Nacionalista bet said his father asked help from a cousin, Nelly Chua, so that they could have Danny admitted to the FEU hospital's charity ward. He said that when his brother died, they held the wake at their house since holding the wake in Funeraria Paz would be too expensive.
"Maaaring Paz ang nandun. Sila ang nag-ayos pero ang burol sa bahay namin dahil hindi namin kaya," he said.
San Rafael village 'not a gated community'
Villar also refuted allegations that his family was not really poor to have been able to afford a house in San Rafael Village.
Esposo said the documents show that the Villars bought a 560-square-meter property in Tondo before 1962, and this was located in an "gated subdivision" of families who were not poor. He added that a poor family would have been happy to have a 100-square-meter property.
He also said that Villar's father must have been earning a sizeable income as a government employee to be able able to borrow P16,000 from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS). He noted that in 1962, senior executives in big corporations made monthly salaries of about P2,000.
He also belied Villar's political ad which refers to a "sea of garbage." During the 1950s, he said there was still no such thing in Metro Manila.
"I was born 1949. The sea of garbage in Metro Manila only happened in the middle part of martial law," he claimed.
Villar, however, said he and his fellow 8 siblings were born in a squatter shack in 500 Moriones Street in Tondo, Manila. "Squatter kami. Siyam kaming magkakapatid na pinanganak doon. Isang banig at isang kulambo lang kami. Nagtitinda kami ng hipon. Sinasamahan ko ang nanay ko sa palengke," he said.
He said his father loaned P16,000 from the GSIS since they wanted to buy a much bigger house for the family.
He said San Rafael Village was not a "gated community" but was actually prone to flooding and had only 10 houses when they first moved in.
"Nakalagay nga gated community kasi tinitignan nila yung kondisyon ngayon but that was 50 years ago. Nung panahon na yun, ibang-iba yun. Yung lugar ay hindi class na subdivision. Katabi yun ng Smokey Mountain...Ang lugar walang gwardya. Siguro ang bahay lang nung lumipat kami mga 10 lang dahil lubog nga kasi pag high tide sa Navotas lumulubog. Walang semento o aspalto ang mga daan," he said.
Humble beginnings
Villar said he is not ashamed of his humble beginnings especially as a former shrimp vendor in Navotas. He said that as a child, he and his mother would buy shrimp at night and then he would sleep for several hours "on a bench that was too short for him" before the customers came.
He also denied that his mother was actually a fish dealer and not an ordinary vendor. He said that he and his mother would sometimes borrow money at usurious rates from Indian businessmen.
Villar said he was offended by allegations that he had been less than truthful in his TV ads.
"Hindi ko tinatanggi na namatay ang kapatid ko at pinasok namin sa FEU. Ang nagpasok sa amin ay yung pinsan ng tatay ko. Hindi ko rin tinatanggi na bumili kami ng bahay, kasi nga 9 kami. Umutang ang tatay ko sa GSIS. Kapag umutang ka, may titulo ka. Hindi ko tinatanggi yun. Iniiba lang nila ang storya," he said.
He said his critics should apologize for spreading lies about him in order to make it appear that he is not really from the poor.
"Nag-iimbento lang sila. Mga haciendero sila at laki sa layaw, ni hindi man lang nakatikim sa kahit na ano sa aking mga kinekwento. Pinipilit nilang paglapitin kami. Hindi kami malapit. Haciendero ang aking kalaban. Ako naman ay walang-wala. Pinapanindigan ko yan. Dapat naman ay humingi nang paumanhin yung mga naninira," he said.
Nacionalista Party spokesman Gilbert Remulla later clarified that the apology should come from all of Villar's detractors including broadsheet columnists such as Esposo, Winnie Monsod and Conrado de Quiros.
"The attacks have been very vicious and they have twisted the truth too much. They have gone beyond what is reasonable in politics. They have crossed the line. They should be ashamed of themselves for delving into something like this," he said.
He added that the attacks on Villar came from the "haciendero mentality" of some presidential candidates who could not accept that someone from humble beginnings would rise above his station and accomplish so much.
For his part, Esposo said he will not apologize to Villar for what he has written since his only objective was to tell the truth. He said he and Villar are "kumpadres."
"The malice is not with me, it's with the people who are lying to this nation," he said. "I'm just doing my job as a writer... I don't like what to me looks like untruth in advertising."

@tonyabs
He turned out as a poor leader of this nation so how can we be better off with Erap?
About Noynoy, how can we be better off with a candidate who neglected to do anything for 12 years? 12 years is a loooong time to prove your worth and still, hanggang pangako lang ang mai-o-offer ni Noynoy.
You said pragmatic ka rin. I fail to see it. You will bet your future on these two personalities na either BAGSAK sa performance or WALANG GINAWA sa puwesto.
Galit kay kay GMA. That's understandable. But choosing Gibo who is under Arroyo's banner over Villar who is an opposition is a bit illogical don't you think?
The LP will do anything to promote the "tsismis" linking Villar and Arroyo. Because they know na kahit na leading si Dakilang Tamad at Kalbo(Noynoy) sa opinion polls and surveys, napakalaki pa ng hindi naisasama sa survey at dun malakas si Villar. Why would they continue discrediting Villar if they knew na malakas na sila?
The sad thing about this is that, instead of ipakita ng LP ang galing ni Noynoy, mas contented silang i-discredit si Villar because wala na silang mai-po-promote pa about Noynoy.
Fact is, with Noynoy or Erap, titigil ang pag-unlad ng bansa. Ang kaso, 50 YEARS OLD NA SI NOYNOY, ALAM NIYA NA MALI ANG KATAMARAN AND YET, GINAGAWA PA RIN NIYA.
So where's the logic of you choosing NOYNOY and ERAP? None. Your logic is flawed.
Unmasking Manny Villar’s fraudulent life story
by Manuel "Boy" Mejorada
I heard Nacionalista Party standard bearer Manny Villar speak before a nation-wide audience over the Bombo Radyo Philippines network in a lame effort to deflect evidence that he was never poor, that his life story as depicted in his campaign jingle that he “swam in a sea of garbage, and had a kid brother die because they were too poor to pay for the hospital bills” was a big fraud. The way Villar talked, one can sense that his whole world is spinning out of control. It was filled with inconsistencies, and he tried to cover one lie with another lie. The thin ice is cracking under his feet.
It was inevitable that Villar had to confront the issue that came out in the articles written by Winnie Monsod and Billy Esposo in the leading periodicals, Philippine Daily Inquirer and Philippine Star. These articles presented documentary proof to disprove the story that the Villars were a poor family in Tondo as the NP presidential candidate has been trying to project, and that the death of a three-year old brother was a consequence of their poverty.
The most damning evidence consisted of a land title which Villar’s father had used to borrow money from GSIS to build a house and the medical certificate from FEU hospital where his brother died on Oct. 13, 1962. You can’t just pretend these issues don’t exist once Monsod and Esposo take them up in their columns. Besides, the issues are documented.
Villar didn’t dispute the authenticity of the documents. He admitted they lived on Bernardo St., San Rafael Village in Tondo which, as pointed out by Monsod and Esposo, were upper-middle class neighborhoods of Tondo in the 60s. Villar also acknowledged the truth that his brother died at the FEU Hospital in 1962.
But Villar insisted they were poor, and they indeed slept — all nine of them — on a single mat. He even went back to the old house on Moriones St., Tondo a few days later to show the media where, as he claims, they had lived. He didn’t detail the period during which they had lived there. Villar simply wants the Filipino people to take his word for it.
It was also true, he said, that he had swam in a sea of garbage. He didn’t mention that in the 50s, the waters near Tondo were clean, and not used as dumping ground for garbage. And I can’t imagine any parent who would allow his or her child to frolic in “a sea of garbage” even if that was true. This is too much of a hard-sell, and Villar can’t expect the image of him being an impoverished child playing in unclean and unsanitary conditions to stick.
Villar said his brother died because they had no money to buy medicines. Now the truth has broken to the surface — Danny was afflicted with leukemia, and the family sought every opportunity to get him treated. The death of Danny wasn’t because his parents couldn’t buy medicines. Death was inevitable; there was nothing money could do to stop the ravage of the disease on the human body.
When the disease had reached terminal stage, the family brought Danny to the FEU hospital. The death certificate is hard to refute, so Villar tries to spin another angle to perform a Houdini act of slipping out of this bind. He said the only reason his brother was admitted to the FEU Hospital is that his father had a cousin who worked as a nurse there, and facilitated the patient’s confinement in the charity ward.
In doing so, Villar only succeeds in causing the cracks in the story start to break wider.
Villar told his Bombo Radyo audience that his brother was regularly examined by the “family doctor” as there were almost no specialists as we know them today at the time. Poor families then, as it remains to be the case now, had barely enough money to see a doctor. For a family like the Villars to have a “family doctor” shatters the myth about their being poor. It is easy for Villar to claim that his brother died as a charity ward patient, but one thing is clear — his brother didn’t die because his parents had no money to buy his medicines.
The documents didn’t stop at the hospital. It was also shown that Danny was taken to the Funeraria Paz, which was reported to be an upscale mortuary service back then. Villar tries to sidestep the issue by saying, “no, he was just embalmed at Funeraria Paz, but we held the wake at our house because it was too expensive there.” On this, Villar again insults the Filipino intelligence. The practice of holding funeral wakes at funeral parlors is a recent development. In the 60s and 70s, bereaved families did their mourning in their homes. Villar’s explanation provides no escape valve for his untruthful statement.
Now that the authenticity of these documents are no longer being disputed, Villar’s assertion that all nine siblings slept on a single mat is also shattered. He is the second of nine children. If his departed brother is number three or number four, by 1962 the family would already have been living in San Rafael Village. How can all the nine siblings sleep on a single mat when by 1962, not all children have been born? It’s simple logic. And besides, no one will believe Villar if he says they still slept on a single mat in San Rafael. Lies, lies, and lies.
Villar’s father was a government bureaucrat. As a salaried employee, he was able to bring food to the family table, clothes and education for the children, and a decent home over their heads. Villar should stop desecrating the memory of his hard-working father who endeavored the provide the best for his children. Even today, a regular government clerk earns enough to keep body and soul above the poverty level.
By Villar’s own candid admission, the house was a two-bedroom house, which is the usual size for starter homes. It was a bigger house than his standard housing units in his subdivisions. This is validated by Jun Borres, the fishing magnate from Iloilo who bought the house in 1987. “Villar grew up there, and it was definitely a nice neighborhood back in the 60s,” Borres told me. It wasn’t, as Villar contends, a lot submerged under a pool of water.
The grant of the GSIS loan to build a house in 1962 contradicts Villar’s claim about the condition of the property. GSIS would not have approved the loan if it found the property unsuitable for the construction of a house. GSIS loans are categorized as supervised credit, meaning you can’t avail of the money unless the house is actually constructed. It must also be emphasized that the loan was for the construction of a house. This means the elder Villars had saved enough money to buy a 560-sqm. property before 1962! Villar knows that first-time home owners buy smaller lots. For his parents to have bought 560-sqm. in a gated subdivision means they had more than enough money.
Villar is once again caught lying.
The GSIS loan also provides a good clue on how much his father, Manuel Villar Sr. was earning from the government. As any GSIS member knows, the amount of loan is based on the salary level of the applicant-member. Sixteen thousand pesos might seem like small change nowadays, but was already a fortune back in 1962. It wasn’t a level that would be granted to a janitor or a clerk. Manuel Villar Sr. occupied a supervisory position. Not exactly the kind of person who would qualify as poor.
Villar’s fraudulent life story is now shattered. He spun a web of fiction to project himself as champion of the poor because he came from the poor. The truth is coming out, and not even Villar can now disprove the facts that are rushing to the surface of the sea.
