Satisfaction with PNoy dips to +49
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE 1) - Net satisfaction with President Benigno Aquino III dropped by nine points in the past quarter, from a "very good" +58 in December to a "good" +49 in March, the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey said.
The survey of 1,200 adults, conducted last March 10-13, showed that 68% of Filipinos said they were satisfied with President Aquino's performance compared to 19% who said they were dissatisfied.
The results of the survey were first published in BusinessWorld.
Speaking to ANC, SWS senior survey research specialist Leo Larosa said the drop in Aquino’s net satisfaction rating is a combination of declining satisfaction with the President in the different areas.
“These include single-digit declines in Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao and a double digit decline of the President's satisfaction rating in Luzon,” he said.
The survey showed that the President suffered a 15-percentage point drop in net satisfaction among respondents in Luzon, excluding Metro Manila. Net satisfaction for the President dropped from +60 in December 2011 to +45 in March 2012.
The survey also showed a nine-point dip in the President's net satisfaction rating among Visayas respondents, from +59 to +50. Other areas, however, showed smaller declines in the President’s rating.
Larosa, meanwhile, noted that Aquino had a higher dip in net satisfaction ratings among Class D respondents or the “masa.” Net satisfaction with the President dropped by 12 percentage points among Class D respondents, from +58 in December to +46 in March.
“The Class D are the masa. If you compare with the results of the previous survey, this is the group where the biggest drop occurred. With Class ABC, there's hardly any change while in Class E, it only fell by 4 points, which is still very good,” he said.
He also pointed out that it is not the first time that Aquino’s ratings fell from “very good” to “good.”
He said Aquino’s ratings fell to +46 in June 2011 before it went back up to +56 in September 2011. “The +49 is not as bad as that of June 2011. It is just one point below very good,” he said.
PNoy wants to increase ‘middle class’
Meanwhile, the survey also showed that 52% of Filipinos believe that Aquino favored the interests of the middle class.
The proportion of those who said the president was serving the poor fell by 13-percentage points, from 48% to 35%. Those who said he was serving the rich rose
4-percentage points, from 23% to 27%%,
SWS said Aquino started his term with most Filipinos seeing him as pro-middle class. As of the latest survey, more see him as pro-poor and fewer consider him favoring the rich.
Responding to the survey, the President admitted that his administration wants to grow the middle class.
"Mawala yung isang kahig, isang tuka. Yung kapag kumayod ka, may patutunguhan. Provide all with opportunities. We want everyone to be part of the middle class,’ he said.
Aquino said he expected his survey ratings to go up and down. What is important, he said, is maintaining the support of the people.
He also said his government is prioritizing the needs of the poor as they are the ones who need help the most. He enumerated his pro poor projects that include the conditional cash transfer program, irrigation for farmers and public healthcare.
