MANILA - Malacañang dismissed a reported call of retired archbishop Oscar Cruz for the president's sister Kris Aquino to state categorically if she has plans to run for the vice presidency in 2016.

Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda described the statement as mere rumor and called on Cruz to give Kris some space.

“Some people, when they grow old, they become elder statesmen. Some people when they grow old, they become rumormongers. I don’t know why. We’d rather not talk on that primarily because I have not discussed anything with Miss Kris Aquino," he said.

He added: "Let’s allow Kris Aquino to live peacefully. She has made a decision right now to be at peace, to live quietly so let’s allow her some space. I hope the good bishop will not engage in chika."

A CBCP News report earlier quoted Cruz as saying that Kris is being groomed to run for vice president in 2016.

“Formerly it was only in whispers now it has become more commonly said and heard that the youngest sister of the president of the republic will also run as vice-president of the republic come 2016,” Cruz said.

Cruz said Kris is being tapped to be the running mate of former senator and now Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas in the 2016 elections.

“Those concerned better address this matter. If it’s not true then they should say it so that it will stop once and for all but if there is silence, that means there is consent,” Cruz stressed.

Cruz clarified that he has nothing against Kris running for vice president and even said that Kris have a great chance of beating other hopefuls if ever.

“She’s an actress and the Filipino electorate in general likes actors and actresses. Like (Senator) Lito Lapid,” he said.

But Cruz said Kris should address the issue now since the rumors about her candidacy began circulating last January.

“The thing is I say this as of today because tomorrow they might say no more. So I’m not saying that she will do it in 2016, I’m just saying that up to now, this is what is being said,” Cruz said.

In 2010, Kris had said that she plans to join politics after the term of her brother expires in 2016.

“I feel naman na bilang isang Aquino, whatever political career I hope to have in the future, it has to start in Tarlac,” she said, adding that she wants to follow in the footsteps of Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos.

Kris is currently vacationing abroad with sons Joshua and James "Bimby" Yap Jr. and is expected to return to the country on Friday. With a report from CBCPNews
