Andal Jr. moved to jail in Bicutan
MANILA, Philippines - The prime suspect in the Maguindanao massacre was transferred on Thursday from a detention cell at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to a jail in Taguig City.
Andal Ampatuan Jr., mayor of the town of Datu Unsay and principal suspect in the November 23 killings, was brought out of the NBI under heavy security at around 10 a.m.
He arrived at the Quezon City jail annex in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig before noon.
Ampatuan Jr. underwent a medical check-up and appeared relaxed at the NBI before he was moved to Bicutan.
He was taken into custody days after the massacre which killed 57 civilians, including 30 journalists.
Meanwhile, Taguig City Mayor Freddie Tinga is opposing the Supreme Court's decision to transfer suspects in the Maguindanao massacre to Camp Bagong Diwa.
Tinga said many residents fear the move may pose a security threat to the city as it may cause unrest in a nearby Muslim community.
He cited the foiled jailbreak of Abu Sayyaf bandits at Camp Bagong Diwa in 2005, which led to a bloody standoff. -- reports from Maan Macapagal, Gus Abelgas, ABS-CBN News; ANC
