Binay: Too early to choose VP bet

MANILA, Philippines – Vice-President Jejomar Binay on Monday said it is too early to announce his possible running-mate when he runs for president in the 2016 national elections.

“Napakaaga pa ho niyan eh. Tignan na lang po natin. Di ba ang sabi, let's think of crossing the bridge when we're already there. Pagdating na sa 2016, mag-uusap po tayo tungkol po sa pulitikang pam-pangulo,” he told reporters at the inauguration of the JSU-AMOSUP Maritime Museum.

Binay denied that his plan to run for president has caused a rift between him and President Benigno Aquino III.

He said his relationship with Aquino remains strong even if he will be running against the President’s anointed in 2016.

UNA eyes coalition with NP, LDP

Binay confirmed that the United Nationalist Alliance is interested in a coalition with the Nacionalista Party of Sen. Manny Villar and the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) of Sen. Edgardo Angara.

He said he had informal talks with Angara last year but had yet to come to a formal agreement. He also said he would be honored to forge a coalition with Villar’s NP.

He said UNA also received “peripheral feelers” from the Liberal Party about a possible coalition. He denied that it was President Aquino who sent the feelers.

“The President and I don’t talk about politics,” he said.

The vice-president also debunked the analysis of his own ally, former Senator Ernesto Maceda, that an acquittal for Chief Justice Renato Corona in the Senate impeachment trial will benefit the vice-president.

He maintained that the impeachment trial is “democracy in action” and everyone should just wait for the results.
