Readers air support for Ted Failon
Since the shooting incident involving Trina Etong, wife of ABS-CBN news anchor Ted Failon, concerned readers have expressed support for the news anchor—and disgust over the behavior of arresting policemen.
Another feedback from Rosavilla Oclarit of Maasin, Southern Leyte expressed her sympathy for the anchor and his family. Like Abalus, she also said she will pray for Failon and his family.
Filipinos from abroad also expressed their sympathies and belief that Failon and the house helpers are innocent. TFC subscribers in Singapore wrote: “Kaya mo yan Ted. You are innocent! We believe you”
‘Over-acting police'
A lot of feedback generally expressed support for Failon and his family, but there were also many messages that expressed disgust over the actions taken by the police.
Cheena Ang, another reader, wrote: “We hate what we are seeing on TV on the policemen’s actions regarding the 'arrest' of all people 'suspected' in the case.”
The men in uniform were even branded as "over-acting" by some readers.
“I am not a lawyer, but it seems gusto nilang palabasin na may foul play nga sa incident,” Oclarit wrote.
She even questioned the watch list order on Failon as instructed by Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez.
Harassment
Remil Borje, another reader, wrote it was clear how the Philippine National Police (PNP) "harassed" the family and the house helpers.
From Colonia, New Jersey, Pompeyo Pedroche wrote that the footage bothered him and his children.
“It disturbed our sense of security. The higher-ups who ordered the arrests should be fired - obviously hindi pinagisipan ang arrest, and obviously, bastos ang treatment. What we saw was even toned down actuations knowing that they were on-camera. Displaced over-acting,” he wrote.
Djohanna Ilagan mused: “The family of Mrs. Etong are still in pain, in grief and in shock from what happened, and yet they've been humiliated by arresting them with no such arrest warrant. Nasa ospital sila to see what's happening to their sister, tapos basta na lang silang magha-handcuff?”
“It was so disgusting to watch on television what the police officials have done to all the persons that were there during the incident of his wife's suicidal. [It was] So upsetting that the police officials were dragging the maids and the driver. They are not animals. This is not martial law when you will pick up people without any proven documents to arrest them,” writes Yami Galupo.
Biased treatment
Another reader who wrote as RHO, said the incident was a “clear indication” of the biased treatment against the family of Ted Failon.
“Ang alam ko kasi, puwde lang damputin ang kinikilalang suspect if merong magsasampa ng kaso or merong complainant…Pero sa kaso nila Ted Failon, wala naman atang nagrereklamo sa kanila or kahit na yong mismong pamilya ng asawa niya, so bakit ganoon nalang ng damputin yong membro ng pamilya nila?”
RHO even speculated that someone might have wanted to harass Failon and his family.
Cleaning the bathroom
Other readers went on to express their opinion on why the helpers cleaned the bathroom after Trina allegedly committed suicide.
A reader named Henry Hope wrote that it was normal for house helpers to clean the blood. “What the kasambahays did was their prime reaction and responsibility as kasambahays considering that there was no "crime" committed inside the house and that is what they believed.”
