NBI exec: No inconsistencies in Failon, household helpers' statements
An official of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Thursday that the sworn statements of ABS-CBN news anchor Ted Failon and his household's members look consistent, which rules out the possibility of subjecting them to polygraph tests.
"I have read the statements and there were no inconsistencies. Personally, after reading the statements, I do not see the need for polygraph test," lawyer Ric Diaz, NBI's designated spokesman for the case of Failon's late wife, Trinidad Arteche-Etong, told radio dzMM's Tambalang Failon and Sanchez.
Diaz, however, clarified that he is not directly involved in the NBI's investigation. He said he was just tasked to act as spokesman for the investigating team.
The NBI official, meanwhile, said that members of the bureau's investigating team will go to the New Era General Hospital in Quezon City and ask for the shirt that Mrs. Etong was wearing when she was found at her daughter's bathroom last April 15.
Diaz said forensic experts of the bureau will test the shirt for gunpowder burns. The NBI has yet to come out with the paraffin test result on Failon's T-shirt, which the news anchor wore when he brought his wife to the hospital.
Diaz said the NBI's psychiatrists will invite Mrs. Etong's friends and relatives to determine her behaviour before the shooting incident. He said the results of the "psychological autopsy" would help the bureau determine if Mrs. Etong committed suicide.
"Parang supportive ng magiging conclusion ng NBI ang psychological autopsy. Titingnan nila kung may behavioral changes before the incident, the presence of stressors and thought control," he said.
The official had assured the public and Failon's family that the NBI will solve the case the soonest possible time. He said the NBI could not afford to drag the "celebrated" case because the public has been watchful of the events regarding Mrs. Etong's death since day one.
He said NBI investigators, including himself, has been watching TV and reading newspapers to be able to get almost all the needed information to finish the investigation.
Diaz said the NBI is now in the process of evaluating all the evidence that have been handed over to them by the Quezon City Police District's Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, headed by Senior Superintendent Franklin Mabanag.
Mabanag and five other members of his team have been suspended over the alleged "excessive use of force" in the arrest of Mrs. Etong's siblings at the hospital.
The incident was the same reason why Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, concurrent chairman of the National Police Commission, asked the National Bureau of Investigation to take over the case.
