Cayetano behind Loren smear job, UNA claims

MANILA (UPDATED) - The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) claimed on Friday that the Team PNoy alliance is slowly disintegrating after Sen. Loren Legarda admitted that a fellow Team PNoy candidate was allegedly behind a smear job against her.

In a press statement, UNA secretary general and campaign manager Toby Tiangco said the leadership of Legarda's party, the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), does not like the way Legarda is being treated in Team PNoy.

Tiangco said the smear campaign being lodged against Legarda was done by paid hacks identified with Nacionalista Party (NP) re-electionist Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.

He said he heard report about Cayetano's alleged role behind the smear job against Legarda, but refused to speculate on the motive.

The other parties in the coalition, aside from the NP, NPC, and Liberal Party, are the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, Akbayan Citizens' Action Party, and the National Unity Party.

"Team PNoy is disintegrating, and everyone can see that the cracks are getting bigger and wider. Sa TV n'yo lang sila makikitang nakangiti sa isa't isa, pero kahit sa entablado, sila-sila ay nagsasapawan," Tiangco said.

"Nakalulungkot lang at mga kasama pa ni Loren sa Team PNoy ang naninira sa kanya. Behind the 'daang matuwid' facade, is a mix of personalities who put ambitions over principles," he added.

Legarda faced the media on Thursday to dispute allegations that she failed to declare a New York condominium unit that she owns in her statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).

Legarda, who is leading in pre-election surveys, said the accusation is merely part of black propaganda that a senatorial candidate launched to discredit her.

Legarda refused to name the senatorial candidate she believes is behind the black propaganda.

"Ang tawag nga ng media sa kanya, 'Boy Kuryente,'" she said, referring to the candidate's supposed reputation for spreading false information.

She said the candidate allegedly also spread nasty rumors about Aquino's mental health during the 2010 presidential race.

Cayetano supported Aquino's rival, Senator Manny Villar, in the 2010 presidential race.
