MANILA - The Japanese government is still carefully studying plans to scrap the visa requirements for Filipinos.

Kenji Kosaka, President of the Japan-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship League (JPPFL) and Secretary-General of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party at the Japanese House of Councilors, said, however, that the government may be able to reach a decision within the year.

Kosaka held a press conference today together with Senate President Franklin Drilon after a bilateral meeting.

Kyodo News earlier reported the plan was anchored on Japan’s bid to attract more tourists from Southeast Asia.

Besides the Philippines, Japan is also supposedly eyeing the same privilege for Indonesia and Vietnam.

Reports also claimed the scrapping of the visa requirements may be implemented this June. – from a report by Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
