MANILA - The eight Philippine Coast Guard personnel charged for the killing of a Taiwanese fisherman off Balintang Channel in May last year have surrendered and posted bail.

The eight Coast Guard men surrendered to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Wednesday.

They posted P40,000 bail each for the homicide case filed against them.

Two of them, who were also charged with an obstruction of justice case, posted a separate P12,000 bail each.

According to their spokesperson, the Coast Guard personnel have been sending feelers to the NBI that they want to surrender.

However, they were encountering problems in getting a lawyer and they also still had to raise funds to be able to pay for their bail.

The eight Coast Guard men charged with homicide for the shooting of 65-year-old Hong Shi Cheng on May 9, 2013 off Balintang Channel were:

  • Seamen 1st Class Edrando Aguila
  • Andy Gibb Golfo
  • Sunny Masangcay
  • Henry Solomon
  • Seaman 2nd Class Nicky Aurello
  • Petty Officer Richard Corpuz
  • Commanding Officer Arnold Dela Cruz
  • Seaman 1st class Mhelvin Bendo

Dela Cruz and Bendo were separately charged with obstruction of justice for submitting a falsified Monthly Gunner Report on the incident. -- Report from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News
