MANILA, Philippines - Presidential frontrunner and Liberal Party standard-bearer Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III attended Mass with his family on Sunday to pray for a peaceful and fraud-free election on Monday.
In an interview, Aquino said he took a break on Sunday after a grueling campaign that started after he announced his presidential bid in September last year. He told ABS-CBN that it was the first time that he slept for 6 hours after the official campaign period started in February.
Aquino - a consistent frontrunner in pre-election surveys on the presidential race - expressed hopes that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will be true to its promise to announce the vote results in 36 hours.
He added, however, that questions left by the "Hello, Garci" wiretapping scandal in 2005 continue to cast doubt on the country's election process.
"The issues of the Garci scandal have yet to be resolved and they have a direct impact today. Was there election cheating then? It's been 6 years without answers. How can we be complacent, that everything will run smoothly when there are problems with the automation everyday?" he said in Filipino.
He added: "I hope Comelec is just overconfident and there is no sinister plot behind it. Again, why should transition of administrations be such a tension-filled event as opposed to being a common day occurrence in a mature democracy? This points the way to us that the next elections should not be like this."
The "Hello, Garci" scam involved the release of recorded wiretapped conversations of Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano allegedly discussing a plot to rig the 2004 presidential election. It sparked the worst political crisis ever in the Arroyo administration and culminated in several failed impeachment attempts against President Arroyo.
Members of the Aquino family and close friends attended a private Mass at the Aquino center in Tarlac City Sunday.
In his homily, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas talked about the road taken by members of the Aquino clan, including Aquino's possible electoral win.
“You are already our president. We’re just asking for the confirmation of our country. You’re our president. Its just sad that your mom wouldn’t be there to attend your oathtaking as president. That’s how life goes. Because if your mom were alive, you would not realize that you're our candidate. Same way that if your father [late former Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr.] were alive, you have not realized that your mom [late president Corazon Aquino] is destined to be our president,” said Villegas, who has close ties with the Aquino clan.
The priest also had a one-on-one session with Aquino to discuss matters of governance.
“Ang gospel is about peace, tatlong bagay - peace is 'bigay', peace is grace, 'pagbibigayan' is sharing, pakikibagay is relationships. Leadership is precisely that, it is a grace from God. Second, leadership is 'pagbibigayan' first and foremost a call to sacrifice, and a leader with good relationships, he should unite,” Villegas told Aquino.
Aquino said it was too soon to judge the Comelec and said he hopes that despite the dire events in the runup to the May 10 polls, the people’s will would still triumph.
He added, however, that Comelec officials could face impeachment if they fail to do their duty on Election Day.
“Marami tayong abogado, may checks and balances in terms of impeachment which will include people in Comelec pag naputanayan na may nagkulang dito. Dapat naman ay may managot," he said.

I hope if elected, Noynoy can live up with his platforms and get the support from the other government branches. I would rather vote for him rather than to Villar. Villar who claimed that he was a poor boy from Tondo did nothing to end the sufferings of the less fortunate people of Las Pinas.
Si Villar ang tunay na sinungaling at manloloko. Matagal siyang Congeressman sa Las Pinas, almost 40 years naman naging Mayor ang biyenan niyang lalaki, dalawa (2) niyang bayaw naging Mayor din at si Nene Aguilar ay incumbent at ang asawa niya ay Congresswoman. Pero ang mahirap sa Las Pinas ay mahirap pa rin, kaya wala siyang kakayanan tapusin ang kahirapan. Kung Las Pinas hindi niya natapos ang kahirapan...buong Pilipinas pa kaya.
Kaya maunlad ang Las Pinas dahil sa dami ng subdivision nila na ang karamihan na tumitira ay galing abroad. Sa madali't salita hindi lehitimong Las Pinas. Ultimo traffic hindi kaya ni Villar at kanyang pamilya resolbahin...bakit? Kasi tatamaan ang subdivision nila sa road widening. Yung friendship route na papasok sa kanilang mga subdivision upang makaiwas sa traffic ay "over price" ang sticker.
Akala ko ba papa imbestigahan niya ang "ZTE Deal"? Iyan ay ayon sa kanyang political ads sa TV. Pero, bakit nakita ko sa isang news clip last week na he was endorsed by ex-Comelec Chairman Ben Abalos sa Mandaluyong? Taas ang kanyang kamay habang kumakaway sa crowd. He's truly the candidate of Arroyo in this election.
Kung Gago ang boboto kay Noynoy...Tanga at Mababa naman ang level ng eduksasyon ang boboto kay Villar. I would rather vote for a dog or cat rather to waste my time voting for Villaroyo

Make the important decisions of who we want to rule our beloved country - VOTE for Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas tandem) you will be seeing the change if these two will become the leader of our country.

This poor farmers would be forced instead to give up the lands as their only way of living, It's time to take Manny Villaroyo to court and may he serve and long awaiting jail time for the crime he committed.

Manny Villaroyo is also willing to dump his long-suffering partner Loren Legarda for Binayorro another pathetic infidels who has nothing but to air out dirty laundry in public just to get the sympathy of voters. But alas, Mar will win anyway

For one thing, Erapoyo is been proven criminal and was impeach for doing so. Manny Villaroyo will follow suit when new administration kick in. And don’t vote for Manny Villaroyo simply because you have fond memories of the scholarship award, and his throwing of money like water to people for them to believe that he is really for the poor? Not because you hate the current president, Manny Villaroyo and Erapoyo are no difference than Gloria Arroyo. They are all the same corrupt and opportunist.
Don’t vote for Manny Villaroyo and Erapoyo because they said, they will not steal again and would make our country a better place to live. Noynoy Aquino and Mar Roxas vow to curve corruption and will not steal because both are already rich and they are tired and sick of these anomaly and trademark of the corrupt politician in office today.
Everyone knows it is wrong to steal (but not for Manny Villaroyo and Erap Estrada because this is their hobby and way of living)—why would Noynoy be voted into office simply for promising to do what everyone should be doing? "THOU SHALL NOT STEAL" and NOYNOY AND MAR will not steal. THEIR GOAL IS TO CLEAN UP THE BAD IMAGE OF POLITICS IN THE PHILIPPINES AND I HOPE WE ARE ALL FOR IT. I KNOW I AM.....ARE YOU?
AND LASTLY, Please DON’T LISTEN to those corrupt politicians LOYALISTS who are running. THEY HAVE ONE INTENTION, to get your trust and Votes so they can continue their lifestyle of corruption and injustice.
