PCOS glitch stalls Noynoy's voting
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - The Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machine deployed to the precinct where front runner Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III was to cast his vote malfunctioned, delaying the Liberal Party (LP) presidential bet's vote by at least 5 hours.
"Sana maayos na ang makina sa presinto natin para makaboto tayo (I hope they can immediately fix the machine in our precinct so we can already vote)," Aquino told reporters in a press briefing at around 10 a.m.
The LP standard-bearer arrived with his sisters, Pinky, Viel and Ballsy at the Central Azucarera de Tarlac Elementary School in San Miguel, Tarlac around 9 a.m.
The Aquinos were assigned to Precinct No. 175-A. A radio dzMM report said the Aquinos, including their late parents, former President Cory Aquino and former Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Jr. had always voted in the same precinct.
The LP presidential candidate's youngest sister, Kris Aquino, was not with the group. She is registered in Makati City.
Aquino said that they were informed that 2 hours since his precinct in Tarlac province opened, only 100 people had been able to cast their votes.
He said they were told that there was no spare PCOS machine, and voters had to wait for a Smartmatic-TIM technician to fix the problem before they can actually vote.
A profusely sweating Aquino was able to finally cast his ballot at past 2 p.m.
Asked why he did not cut the line like other presidential and vice-presidential candidates, Aquino said: "Ang gustong mamuno, kailangan maging mahusay na tagasunod. Hindi puwede na naglilingkod ka sa taong bayan na sila ang mahihirapan, kayo hindi. Dapat ho damay-damay ito."
ABS-CBN News reporter Ces Drilon said at least 300 from a total of 900 voters from the same precinct were able to cast their votes, as of past 2 p.m.
Citing reports from the LP, at least 20 of the 201 PCOS machines deployed to Tarlac province malfunctioned.
Gibo breezes through
Meanwhile, Aquino's cousin, administration bet Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro was able to vote in Barangay Carabaoan, Mayantok town, also in Tarlac province.
Teodoro arrived at the polling precinct before 9 a.m. and was able to shade his ballot in around 3 minutes. He used a guide, which may have helped him fill up his ballot quickly.
Meanwhile, evangelist presidential candidate Eddie Villanueva of Bangon Pilipinas was the first to cast his vote among all presidential candidates.
Villanueva cast his ballot at the Bunlo Elementary School in Bocaue, Bulacan at around 7:40 a.m.
As of posting time, Nacionalista Party's Manuel "Manny" Villar Jr. and former President Joseph Estrada of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), had also cast their votes. -- Reports from Ces Drilon, ABS-CBN News and Jun Lingcoran, radio dzMM
