MANILA, Philippines - After 12 years, Quezon City vice mayor Herbert Bautista was able to seek revenge to the man who defeated him in 1998 when he first sought the mayoralty post.

Bautista, who was proclaimed winner in the Quezon City mayoral race Tuesday afternoon, defeated former mayor Ismael Mathay Jr.

Bautista, who has served as vice mayor for four terms—from 1995-1998 and from 2001-2010—also defeated former environment secretary and presidential chief of staff and Michael Defensor and Rep. Annie Susano of the second district, the most populous legislative district in Quezon City.

A former actor, Bautista, started his political career after winning as councilor of the 3rd district in 1992. After losing in 1998, he was appointed by then President Joseph Estrada as commissioner-at-large of the National Youth Commission in 1999 and made a successful comeback as vice mayor three years later.

"There are institutional problems that should be implemented and continued. We will discuss these with our new vice mayor Joy Belmonte," said Bautista in a television interview after his proclamation.

Belmontes also win

Joy Belmonte, Bautista's running mate and daughter of outgoing mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., was also
proclaimed winner. The younger Belmonte got 501, 125 votes and defeated actress Aiko Melendez who only received 121,941 votes.

Mayor Belmonte, meanwhile, was able to reclaim his post as representative of the 4th district. Belmonte held the post from 1992-2001.
