Bishop warns CJ: Don't back out of testimony
MANILA, Philippines - A Catholic bishop has warned Chief Justice Renato Corona from backing out of his promise to testify in his impeachment trial.
In a CBCPNews report, Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes said he is looking forward to Corona's testimony before the Senate impeachment court.
“A very good development so that he can explain his alleged ill-gotten wealth and can be cross-examined,” he said.
He said backing out of the witness stand will fuel suspicion against the chief magistrate.
“We will become suspicious if he backs out,” the bishop said.
Other bishops also welcomed Corona's decision to testify in the trial.
Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said Corona made the right decision so that he can finally shed light on his alleged $10 million foreign currency deposits.
“That is good. People can see his side of the story from him,” said Lagdameo, former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
Marbel Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez also lauded Corona’s decision, because after all, “it’s the right of the accused to be heard.”
