Corona testimony is 'make or break,' defense lawyer says
MANILA, Philippines - Chief Justice Renato Corona's testimony when he takes the witness stand in his impeachment trial will "make or break" his case, one of his lawyers said Friday.
Atty. Tranquil Salvador III, in a briefing by the defense, said they are doing their best to prepare Corona.
His lawyers admitted that they have no control over the kinds of questions that will be asked and how far will these go.
They assured that Corona will answer any question that will be asked.
Salvador, meanwhile, House prosecutors themselves, not private lawyers, should be the ones who should conduct the cross examination on the Chief Justice.
"Dalawang buwan na nilang hinihingi ito. The public is waiting for them to ask the questions themselves. Their constituents have expectations na sana sila mismo ang sumalang. Sana huwag nilang ipasa sa private prosecutors," he claimed.
Another defense team spokesperson, Atty. Karen Jimeno, said Corona doesn't need to get permission from the Supreme Court to take the witness stand as the high court's earlier resolution only prevents SC employes from divulging confidential matters pertaining to court records.
Jimeno added that as long as Corona's rights are respected, they have no qualms if the Senate will expedite the trial in order to come out with a verdict before the Senate adjourns. - report from Jing Castañeda, ABS-CBN News
