Angara: Burden on defense to refute AMLC records

MANILA, Philippines – Senator-judge Edgardo Angara challenged the defense panel of Chief Justice Renato Corona to prove that the bank records divulged by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales are inadmissible in the impeachment court.

“The burden is now on the part of the defense,” he said.

Angara insists that the “waiver” clause provided for in the Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) clearly allows the Ombudsman to look into the bank accounts of government employees suspected of laundering huge amounts of money.

“’Yung waiver sa SALN, may consent na ang depositor na buksan ang accounts,” he said.

The senator-judge added that the Ombudsman’s statements and revelations are just confirmations of the allegations of the prosecution that the Chief Justice has indeed a dollar account that was not reflected in his SALN.

“Sa case na ito, permissible ‘yun, because nasa evidence na,” he said.
