MANILA - Unless he sees valid reasons, President Aquino is not inclined to support a proposal of Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brillantes to postpone the October barangay elections.

“’Yung postponement kinakabahan ako d’yan, baka maraming postponement na mangyari tulad ng dating karanasan natin. At ‘yung mandato ng tao kailangan ma-secure ‘yun periodically. So unless I see very good reasons to postpone, I think I’ll stick with my stand previously na kakayanin nila o dapat kayanin nila to hold as scheduled,” Aquino told reporters.

Brillantes earlier said he will endorse to Congress a bill postponing the October 2013 barangay elections to either October 2014 or January 2015.

He said Comelec still has its hands full with the mid-term elections. He also said he expects protest cases to be filed soon.

Brillantes said the October barangay election is too close to the midterm elections.

“We expect protest cases. We’re drafting new protest rules,” he said.

Meantime, Aquino vouched for the integrity of the results of the midterm elections and disagreed with a reported observation of the group AES Watch questioning the conduct of the polls. With a report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
