Gonzales: SC may not help Corona

MANILA, Philippines - House Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II on Monday said Chief Justice Renato Corona may no longer be able to count on the Supreme Court for relief should he be convicted by the Senate impeachment court.

Deputy lead prosecutor Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas urged Corona to respect and accept the Senate's verdict, whatever it maybe.

This, after Corona’s lawyers indicated that an appeal to the High Court is an option.

"Eh right niya iyon if he rejects. Right niya to reject and it is also a right to reject his rejection. Di ba? Wala. Eh di nasa denial stage yan. Puro siya denial eh. Puro palusot.

House Speaker Sonny Belmonte said, "I think the chief justice has also stated that he would accept the judgment of the Senate. So let us just rely on his statement rather than the well, siya, I’d rather believe what he said."

Chief prosecutor Niel Tupas, meanwhile, criticized the defense. "Inamin niya na meron silang plano pero kami naman di ba sinasabi namin first day pa lang kung hindi favorable sa iyo tapos pupunta sa iyong home court. Nasaan doon yung good faith on the part of the respondent?"
