Sotto sides with public, votes guilty
MANILA, Philippines - Senator-judge Vicente Sotto III voted to convict and remove Chief Justice Renato Corona from office.
In his explanation, Sotto said democracy lies with the people, and “in my conscience, I’ve heard the public decide.”
He said he could not comprehend how a simple court official can be booted out of office by simple missteps, but the same would not apply to the chief justice.
“My question: Should the same strict measure ought to be applied to the members of the Supreme Court? The answer depends on who you ask, so I put that aside…After 43 days, this trial has been heard by the people," he said.
He was the 17th senator to vote guilty. Only 3 senators voted to acquit Corona--Joker Arroyo, Miriam Defensor Santiago, and Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
