MANILA, Philippines -- Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago seems to have gathered a larger following among Filipinos because of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Call what she did at the trial what you may: insane antics, or extremely intelligent behavior expected of the Philippines' first representative to the International Criminal Court, Santiago has become one of the country’s most memorable personalities.

Her speech explaining her vote at the impeachment trial recently became one of the most popular among netizens, garnering the most likes at ABS-CBNnews.com’s vote tally page, with Senator Lito Lapid’s “simple and uncomplicated” at second place.

Filipinos stood ready to create memes of her antics, which immediately went viral on social networking sites.

From her “Wah!” expressing dismay at the prosecution panel, to her tiff with private prosecutor Vitaliano Aguirre, as well as her “I thought I was unlimited?” remark at Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s request for her to wind up her speech at the trial’s last day, humorous memes sprung up to chronicle her most quotable quotes.

Now that the trial is over, Filipinos said they will miss the “gentle lady from Iloilo” the most.

In a poll on ABS-CBNnews.com’s Facebook page, Santiago was at the top of the list of personalities netizens will miss the most, with Enrile at a far second, and defense lead counsel Serafin Cuevas at third.

In the results of the same poll on ABS-CBNnews.com (at left side of this article), however, Santiago was neck-and-neck with Enrile, with both of them garnering almost the same percentage of votes. Defense spokesperson Karen Jimeno was at third place as of posting.

On why he would miss Santiago, Lou Edfred Anam said on Facebook, “Miriam, tagus-tagusan sa kaluluwa kung manermon.”

Dona Valbuena responded, “Senator Miriam Santiago. We must have utmost respect for her or else, she’ll go ballistic. I hope she’ll master her anger, she is brilliant anyway.”

Joshua Evenstrums Knyght agreed, posting, “I’ll miss the brilliance of Senator Miriam Santiago. Siya lang sa lahat ng mga senator-judges ang nag-uphold ng batas and interpreted and gave more weight to the legal/judicial aspect of the impeachment at hindi iyong political.”

One person, Dennis Sangalang, said he would miss seeing impeachment head-turner Atty. Macel Jimenez.

Eugene Laomoc, however, said that he would not miss anyone in the trial. “Walang na miss…tapos na, e. Sana pokus sa isla naman yung pananakop ng China.”
