Binay recommends military honors in Ilocos for Marcos
Human rights victims assail recommendation
MANILA, Philippines (1st UPDATE) - Vice President Jejomar Binay has recommended to President Aquino that the late former President Ferdinand Marcos be given military honors in his home province of Ilocos Norte, not in Libingan ng mga Bayani, 3 separate sources told ABS-CBN News.
After consulting various sectors and citizens, Binay has recommended that the late dictator be given full military honors as a former soldier and commander-in-chief.
A survey conducted by the Office of the Vice-President revealed public opinion is split on the issue of giving Marcos a hero's burial.
The sources said Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his sister, Imee, have spoken to Binay about the burial. They said the Marcoses are satisfied with Binay's recommendation.
Human rights victims assail recommendation
Meantime, Claimants 1081, a group of human rights victims, said the granting of military honors is an insult to the victims of the Marcos dictatorship.
"Bakit mo bibigyan ng parangal ang isang mandarambong at isang human rights violator? Parang nakalimutan na yata ang mga kasalanan niya [Marcos] sa bayan," said Etta Rosales, who is chair of both Claimants 1081 and the Commission on Human Rights.
Rosales said she plans to send a letter to Binay and to Office of the President opposing the recommendation.
Binay was a human rights lawyer during the Marcos regime, and Rosales is hoping he has not forgotten what his former clients have been through.
Marcos was elected president in 1965 and was re-elected for a second term in 1969.
But before the end of his second term, he imposed martial law in 1972 and stayed as president until 1986 when he was deposed by a bloodless People Power revolt led by President Aquino's mother, Corazon.
Marcos died in exile in Hawaii in 1989 but has yet to be buried. His remains are preserved in a refrigerated crypt in the family mausoleum in Batac, Ilocos Norte.
At least 216 members of the House of Representatives have signed House Resolution No. 1135, initiated by Sorsogon Rep. Salvador Escudero, urging President Aquino to allow the burial of the remains of late strongman at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.
President Aquino has refused to comment on the issue of giving Marcos a hero's burial. Aquino has maintained that Marcos ordered the murder of his father, the late Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., in 1983.
Instead, the President assigned Binay to study the issue of a hero's burial for Marcos.
Cremate him and throw his ashes into the sea
Marcos and Ninoy Aquino were just the same. They were both heroes of corporations and the wealthy. Pretending to be heroes of the masses is just a front. The clash between them is just a game between greedy or wealthy people. Zobel, for instance, couldn’t become wealthier as long as Marcos was around. His wealth was at risk.
The clash between them is like the rivalry among the Cojuangcos. They are all just hungry pirates competing against each other in zero-sum game. The farmers in Aquino’s or the Cojuangco’s property will definitely agree.
They are all the ones causing poverty. Indigenous Filipinos used to be rich when corporations were not around. They were self-sufficient farmers, fishermen and weavers who did not need money in a land of paradise. Back then, Hindu Brahmin just taught Mangyans to cremate their dead and throw the ashes into the river.
But when greedy people took over, poverty arrived because they had to work for them for money. Consequently, all this fuss about Marcos’ burial is just all about greed from both sides.
he is not deserve the honor
first time in the history na ang convicted corrupt official ay mabigyan ng military honor. Its a very big shame.they dont't even apologize sa mga ginawa nilang pagpahirap sa taong bayan,sa kanilang pagnanakaw at mga kasalanan.
