MANILA, Philippines - Chief Justice Renato Corona vowed on Friday to speed up the re-convening of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) in order to make way for the first Supreme Court associate justice who will be appointed by President-apparent Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.

In an interview with reporters, Corona said that the Supreme Court en banc will end its recess next Tuesday, and JBC meetings are expected to resume shortly after.

Corona said the vacancy must be filled up 90 days after the vacancy occurred, which was last May 17 .

The JBC, on the other hand, will also be experiencing its own reorganization due to the recent elections.

Dean Amado Dimayuga will retire on June 19.

Aside from him, a new representative from the House of Representatives will replace Matias Defensor, head of the House justice committee who lost in a congressional district race in Quezon City.

Defensor is staying only until June 13.

There will also be a new Department of Justice (DOJ) secretary after June 30 replacing Alberto Agra.

Meanwhile, Corona said he has not had a chance to speak with Aquino yet, and he has no information on whom he will take his oath on June 30.

He said he only expects to have an audience with Aquino when the Judicial Executive and Legislative Council or (JELAC) holds its first meeting.

Aquino's camp has indicated that he may take his oath before Associate Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales, one of the justices who voted against a high court decision upholding President Arroyo's right to midnight appointments in the Supreme Court. -- report from Timi Nubla, ABS-CBN News
