Next chief justice no Jessica Sanchez – Recto

MANILA, Philippines - Senator Ralph Recto said the search for the next Chief Justice should not be subjected to klieg lights ala American Idol.

In a statement, Recto lambasted proposals to show the proceedings at the Judicial and Bar Council(JBC) via television and radio broadcasts. The applicants have also required to sign bank waivers.

“Let’s not bring in the cameras inside the JBC, one televised impeachment drama should be enough for one year,” he said.

He said the process is not similar to discovering the next “Jessica Sanchez,” who won runner-up in the just finished 11th season of American Idol.

Sanchez and other contestants vied to court the votes of America through her “good diction, fancy wardrobe and cerebral exhibition.”

“We created the JBC to do the work that the more than 100 million Filipinos could not do. We should trust them to give us a short list of nominees that are worthy of becoming the next CJ,” Recto said.

He said the process should be bereft of any glitz or fanfare in order to preserve its integrity.

'Waivers, built-in absurd trap'

The applicants have also been required to sign bank waivers for the JBC, which Recto does not find useful.

He said requiring the CJ nominees to sign bank waivers “is self- limiting and might drive away differently opinionated but very much qualified would-be nominees.”

“We might be limiting the field of choices and miss out the best and the brightest just, maybe because they see it as a built-in but absurd trap,” he said.

He said the choice should be left to the President, who will “deliver to us a chief justice that is beyond suspicion and reproach.”

Instead of the fanfare, Recto said he trusts the media to sift through the goings-on at the JBC “and alert us with any sign of lutong macao.”
