MANILA - President Benigno Aquino III will lead the 116th Philippine Independence Day celebration on Thursday in Naga City, the same day anti-pork barrel scam groups intend to mount a massive protest action in the capital.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte made the announcement in an interview over Radyo ng Bayan on Saturday.

Valte explained the reason for the holding of the Independence Day celebration in Naga. "Kung napansin ninyo po mula nang umupo po ang Pangulong Aquino ay...parang iniikot po natin ang ating mga celebrations ng Independence Day. Nagsimula po tayo sa Kawit (Cavite), tapos nagkaroon po tayo sa Tarlac."

"Sinusundan po natin iyong mga bayan na nagkaroon ng special significant sa pagtutulak nung ating laban para naman ho sa ating kalayaan at kasarinlan," she added.

Previously, the President also led Independence Day celebrations in Malalos and Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila.

Aquino will lead the Independence Day flag-raising in Naga City early on Thursday, after which he will return to Malacañang for an 11 a.m. diplomatic reception or vin d'honneur.

Valte urged protesters who will mount massive protest actions on Thursday to do so peacefully.

"Siguro po doon sa mga magra-rally po on June 12, io-observe lang po natin iyong mga regulations when it comes to the rally at sana lang po ay maging mapayapa po iyong ating mga demonstrasyon. We are hoping that the demonstration will be orderly and will be peaceful," said Valte.

This year's Independence Day celebration will carry the theme "Ang Pagsunod sa Yapak ng mga Dakilang Pilipino Tungo sa Malawakan at Permanenteng Pagbabago."
